We report on the detection of nine lines of the n 2 bending mode of triatomic carbon, C 3 , in the direction of Sagittarius B2. The R(4) and R(2) lines of C 3 have been also detected in the carbon-rich star IRC ϩ10216. The abundances of C 3 in the direction of Sgr B2 and IRC ϩ10216 are Ӎ and Ӎ10 Ϫ6 , respectively. In Ϫ83 # 10 Sgr B2 we have also detected the 2 3 -1 2 line of NH with an abundance of a few times 10 Ϫ9 . Polyatomic molecules will have a weak contribution from their pure rotational spectrum to the emission/absorption in the far-infrared. We suggest, however, that they could be, through their low-lying vibrational bending modes, the dominant carriers of emission/absorption in the spectrum of bright far-infrared sources.

n NH (n= 1, 3 and 5) CARBENES. This work reviews some applications of ab initio molecular orbital calculations to the elucidation of structures of interstellar molecules. The case of the C n NH (n=1, 3 and 5 ) carbenes is extensively analyzed and discussed. Theoretical conformational analysis and predicted values for the rotational constants and dipole moments of the singlet state of C 5 NH are reported for the first time and a comparison is performed with results previously obtained for C 3 NH and CNH.Keywords: ab initio calculations; rotational constants; interstellar molecules. DIVULGAÇÃO I. UMA BREVE INTRODUÇÃO À QUÍMICA INTERESTELARAcredita-se que cerca de 90% de toda a matéria do universo é constituída de corpos tais como estrelas e planetas, e apenas algo em torno de 10% representa o chamado meio interestelar (MIE), que é constituído, por sua vez, por aproximadamente 90% de poeira cósmica e 10% de gases 1 . Na nossa galáxia esses gases, que geralmente formam imensas nuvens, encontram-se distribuídos principalmente no centro e na periferia. O interesse natural de conhecer estas nuvens, que são fontes de formação de moléculas no meio interestelar, tem levado os astroquímicos a estudar, entre vários aspectos, a sua composição química.De acordo com a temperatura e a densidade as nuvens se classificam em difusas e densas 1 . Nas primeiras, que têm uma densidade de apenas cerca de 10 moléculas por cm 3 e são facilmente penetradas por parte da radiação externa das estrelas, principalmente radiação ultravioleta (100-200 nm), a temperatura fica em torno de 100 K e constata-se a presença de molé-culas e íons simples, como o H 2 , He ,H 2 + , CO e O 2 . As nuvens densas têm densidade cerca de 100 vezes maior e são mais frias, com temperaturas próximas a 30 K. Estas nuvens, onde se encontram moléculas maiores como NH 3 , H 2 CO e HC 3 N são o principal "laboratório" da maioria das descobertas de moléculas no MIE 1-3 . As primeiras detecções de espécies datam da década de 1940, mas é o ano de 1963 que marca o início da química interestelar, com a observação do radical OH 1,4 . Desde então, um número surpreendente de moléculas tem sido detectado no MIE. Atualmente as espécies detectadas são mais de 100, incluindo variedades isotópicas.Nas últimas décadas, com o avanço ocorrido no campo da radioastronomia e o surgimento de computadores e programas cada vez mais velozes e sofisticados, uma quantidade substancial de trabalhos de química interestelar tem aparecido na literatura, especialmente sobre questões relativas à distribuição da matéria na galáxia e à presença de moléculas funcionando como "traçadores" de gases interestelares, fornecendo informações acerca das condições no interior das nuvens. Além disso, algumas espécies detectadas no MIE são tidas como intermediárias em importantes reações orgânicas, apesar de raramente terem sido isoladas ou observadas em laboratório. Context. New radiotelescopes, such as the very sensitive ALMA, will enable the detection of interstellar molecules in much lower concentrations than previously possible. A successful identification of an interstellar molecule requires that laboratory microwave and millimeter-wave spectra are investigated. Several cyanopolyynes and alkynylcarbonitriles have already been detected in the interstellar medium (ISM). Cyanoacetylene (HC≡C-C≡N) is abundant in the ISM and its methyl derivative, 2-butynenitrile (CH 3 C≡C-C≡N), is also present. The next derivative, ethyl cyanoacetylene, (2-pentynenitrile C 2 H 5 C≡C-C≡N) may also be present in interstellar space. Aims. We report the rotational spectrum of the ethyl cyanoacetylene (C 2 H 5 C≡C-C≡N). This is hoped to facilitate identifying gaseous ethyl cyanoacetylene in the ISM. Methods. We studied the rotational spectrum of C 2 H 5 C≡C-C≡N between 13 and 116 GHz with the microwave spectrometer of the University of Oslo. The spectroscopic study was augmented by high-level quantum-chemical calculations at B3LYP/cc-pVTZ and CCSD/cc-pVTZ levels of theory.Results. We present for the first time the rotational spectrum of the ethyl cyanoacetylene (C 2 H 5 C≡C-C≡N). We assigned 342 transitions of the vibrational ground state, accurate values were obtained for rotational and centrifugal distortion constants, and the dipole moment was determined as well.
