Virtual environments lack a standardised interface between the user and application, this makes it possible for the interface to be highly customised for the demands of individual applications. However, this requires a development process where the interface can be carefully designed to meet the requirements of an application. In practice, an ad-hoc development process is used which is heavily reliant on a developer's craft skills. A number of formalisms have been developed to address the problem of establishing the behavioural requirements by supporting its design prior to implementation. We have developed the Marigold toolset which provides a transition from one such formalism, Flownets, to a prototype-implementation. In this paper we demonstrate the use of the Marigold toolset for prototyping a small environment.

Most virtual environments are sterile places where the objects rarely interact with each other, and the user moves through the space as i f most of the objects weren't there. Interesting virtual environments require a high level of user interaction. The user must be able to interact with the objects in the environment, and there must be interesting activities occurring in the environment. Providing this level of interaction is a major challenge to both the virtual reality and animation research communities, and forms a fertile research area. This paper identifies some of the major issues in providing interesting behaviors for virtual environments. Some of these issues are illustrated by the problems we encountered when producing a virtual environment for skiing. This paper also outlines an approach to solving some of the problems with behaviors for virtual environments.

The development of digital media requires the skills of both technical and creative individuals. Technical experts produce the underlying technology that makes the medium possible, but without high quality content the medium won't be successful. In order for a digital medium to be successful it must be possible for content designers to have as much access as possible to the technology without requiring the hands-on assistance of technology experts. This paper examines the problem of creating authoring tools for virtual environments that allow content designers to produce interesting artistic environments without the direct assistance of programmers. Over the past two years we have been developing authoring tools for artistic virtual environments, and these tools form the basis of our virtual reality courses. Most of the students in these courses have limited programming abilities, so they cannot use programming based tools for producing their virtual environments. This paper presents some of the important things that we have learned and a brief discussion of the tools that we have produced.
