BackgroundDeaf or hard-of-hearing children experience difficulties in learning health principles. But technology has significantly improved their ability to learn. The challenge in e-learning is to design attractive applications while having an educational aspect.ObjectiveThe aims of this study were to determine the pedagogical effectiveness of a health education application for deaf and hard of hearing students in elementary schools, and to investigate the student’s perceptions in different educational grades about the educational effectiveness of the text, graphics, video clips, and animation in the application.MethodsThe study design was quasi experimental and was conducted in Mashhad in 2016. Study population were deaf or hard-of-hearing students in elementary schools. The intervention included health application training to deaf and hard-of-hearing students in Mashhad. A questionnaire was used for data gathering. The pedagogical effectiveness was determined by measuring the modified Adapted Pedagogical Index. This index was created based on the characteristics of the application and study population. Statistical analysis was performed using the Kruskal-Wallis and Mann–Whitney tests with Bonferroni adjustment by SPSS 22.ResultsEighty-two students participated in the intervention. The value of modified Adapted Pedagogical Index was 0.669, indicating that the application was effective. The results of Kruskal-Wallis H and Mann–Whitney U test showed significant differences in different educational grades. (p<0.008)ConclusionUsing information technology can improve the education of deaf and hard-of-hearing students. Modified Adapted Pedagogical Index can be used for evaluation of non-interactive applications for elementary school children who are deaf or hard of hearing.

Teaching and learning through digital technology is currently experiencing very rapid changes. Changes, especially in the reading system can be seen through the use of digital material with technology-based. To achieve that context, this research was carried out to test an interactive reading material for Standard Two primary school student. The experiment group was exposed to the use of interactive multimedia material, while the control group was exposed to the use of conventional material. Quasi-experimental method was used in this study to test Standard Two Student's achievement in reading comprehension. Data were analyzed by descriptive and inferential methods. Descriptive data are mean and standard deviation. Inferential data were analyzed using ANCOVA statistic. The result showed that there were significant difference between the use of interactive and conventional material when the pre-test is statistically controlled or covariates. The result shows the implication that interactive multimedia reading material makes student more creative and critical in reading. Therefore, it is proposed to the Ministry of Education, Malaysia to intensify the use of interactive multimedia materials in order to improve the achievement of student in reading.

Perkembangan bidang teknologi dalam sistem pendidikan Bahasa Melayu pada alaf ini sedang mengalami transformasi yang amat pesat. Transformasi dalam bidang ini, terutamanya dalam pengajaran dan pembelajaran Bahasa Melayu dapat dilihat menerusi kewujudan dan penggunaan bahan yang interaktif dengan berasaskan laman web. Dalam mentransformasikan perkembangan tersebut, kajian ini dilakukan untuk mengenal pasti kefahaman membaca kanak-kanak dengan menggunakan bahan bacaan interaktif. Dua kumpulan kajian dikenal pasti dalam kajian ini. Sampel kajian terdiri daripada 60 orang kanak-kanak lapan tahun, masing-masing 30 orang di Perak dan Selangor. Bagi setiap negeri, satu kumpulan telah didedahkan dengan penggunaan bahan bacaan berasaskan laman web. Satu kumpulan yang lain pula telah didedahkan dengan penggunaan bahan konvensional. Data kajian dianalisis secara deskriptif dan inferensi. Data deskriptif ialah min dan sisihan piawai. Data inferensi pula dianalisis dengan menggunakan statistik ANCOVA. Dapatan kajian menunjukkan bahawa terdapat perbezaan yang signifikan antara penggunaan bahan bacaan interaktif berasaskan laman web dengan penggunaan bahan konvensional apabila ujian pra dikawal secara statistik atau dikovariatkan. Dari segi penggunaannya, bahan bacaan berasaskan laman web mampu menjana murid lebih kreatif dan kritis untuk memahami bacaan. Justeru, dicadangkan supaya pihak Kementerian Pendidikan Malaysia dan Pusat PERMATA Negara melaksanakan penggunaan bahan berkenaan secara giat dalam usaha meningkatkan kefahaman membaca kanak-kanak. Kata Kunci: Teknologi dalam sistem pendidikan, bahan bacaan interaktif, laman web, kefahaman membaca.
