Multiple wire twisted steel strands are commonly used to hoist elevators, concrete structures, etc. Due to frequent and long-time usage, the steel strands are subjected to corrosion, overloads, and aging, making strands may fail unexpectedly. Hence, the health monitoring of steel strands becomes more important to avoid the sudden collapse of hoisting structures. Guided waves (GW) inspection methods have become favorable in recent years due to its long-distance transmission and stability of evaluation in the area of structural health monitoring (SHM) and Non-Destructive Testing (NDT). Many researchers have reported different GW methods to detect different types of defects that occurred in steel strands. However, researchers rarely carry out comparative studies to investigate the effectiveness of each method or system in monitoring the health state of steel strands. This article reports some vital observations revealed from conducting experiments by using contact and noncontact methods, which include three different popular types of GW sensors and methods during their applications in surface-type defect detection. The proper selection of sensors systems has been identified through the present study. The result of the present study is believed to be useful guidance for selecting appropriate GW methods and sensor systems to monitor the integrity of the steel strand and thereby ensure the safety of the hoisted structures.

Directional piezoelectric sensors can detect the Lamb wave propagation direction to locate damage in structural health monitoring (SHM). The directivity of the round piezoelectric fiber is exploited with a 0°/45°/90° rosette configuration to acquire flexural Lamb wave signals. The directional response of the piezoelectric fiber under narrowband tone-burst excitation is theoretically deduced. Experimental tests are conducted to demonstrate the directivity and the frequency response property of the piezoelectric fiber under different excitation central frequencies in comparison with the MFC, rectangular piezoelectric sheet, and circular piezoelectric disc. Continuous wavelet transform (CWT) is applied to extract the maximum response amplitude information of the acquired Lamb wave signal at a central frequency. Experimental test results indicate that the piezoelectric fiber is capable to be used as a Lamb wave directional sensor than other piezoelectric sensors. A numerical estimation method for the Lamb wave propagation direction is proposed by defining an error function between the theoretical and experimental normalized response amplitude. The proposed method is generally applicable for different rosette configurations. Experimental results validate the accuracy of the proposed estimation method. The research results are significant to design or select the piezoelectric sensor to measure Lamb wave signals.

Pipe risers partially covered by a wall are difficult to test because the concrete causes large attenuation and mode conversion. Both reasons make it difficult to analyze the signal. This paper reports the design of an axial magnetized magnetostrictive patch transducer (AM-MPT) for efficient transduction of longitudinal guided wave, which can be used to detect defects in concrete-covered pipe risers. First, the paper started with a theoretical background about the influence of length-to-width ratio of the magnetized rectangular patch on the demagnetizing factors and the magnetic field intensity of the patch. Second, the simulation and experimental results proved that the length-to-width ratio of the magnetized iron cobalt patch has a great influence on its magnetic field intensity and signal amplitude of the AM-MPT. Comparison experiments proved that the static magnetic field of AM-MPT provided by an iron cobalt patch led to larger signal amplitudes than those provided by magnets. Third, the attenuation of L(0,2) in concrete-covered pipe riser were studied using the AM-MPT experimentally, which were according with disperse simulation results basically. And the experimental results proved that AM-MPT was more suitable to be applied in concrete-covered pipe risers testing than original MPT.Finally, the AM-MPT was applied in a defect identification of concrete-covered pipe riser sample. The experimental results for the AM-MPT and the piezoelectric transducer showed that the AM-MPT can potentially be applied in pipe riser defect identification.
