From the point of view of historical demography, apart from some papers concerning island populations, such as for example those of Hionidou (1993) and Gavalas (2002Gavalas ( , 2005Gavalas ( , 2008, other approaches, though not strictly demographic, focused on mainland Greece, including for example those of Bournova (1995) for Rapsani andCaftanzoglou (1994, 1997) for Syrrako.…”

“…However, the largest migrant groups in Germany stem from Italy, Poland, Greece, Romania, and Turkey 35 . All of these countries also experienced effects of WWII, closely associated with increased mortality, hunger, and stress 36-40 . Although this may lead to similar late-life effects on morbidity and mortality compared to the German population, it is possible that different timing of exposure may affect our results.…”

“…The crisis followed the naval blockade imposed by the allies in the wake of Greece's occupations by the Italians and the Nazis in April 1941. A food scarcity quickly ensued, and assumed crisis proportions within months (see also Hionidou 1995Hionidou , 2002). Hionidou's main focus here is on the operation of food markets, and in particular black markets.…”
