Fat is a metabolically dynamic tissue. Its metabolism is under the control of several well-characterized hormonal systems. There appear to be changes in the hormonal sensitivity of rat fat with age. No single mechanism has been proved to explain all the changes observed in adipocyte hormonal responsiveness with aging, although it does seem likely that age does have an independent effect on fat metabolism from studies to date.

“…Abhängigkeiten der Fettzellgrösse, der basalen und der stimulierten Lipolyse sowie des Reveresterungsindex vom Grad des Übergewichts waren dabei nicht nachweisbar, so dass eine isolierte Prüfung des Altersefiektes möglich war. Eine Korrelation der basalen Metabolitproduktion und der Reverestcrung zum Alter der untersuchten Norm-und Übergewichtigen ergab sich in unserem Untersuchungsmaterial im Unterschied zu den tierexperimentel len Befunden [Carlson et al, 1968;D ury, 1962;Altschuler et al, 1961;Jelinkova et al, 1969;Desbals et al, 1970] nicht. On isolated human adipose tissue of 80 lean und 50 obese subjects of 18 to 72 years of age the mean fat cell diameter and the in vitro release of glycerol and free fatty acids were determined. In obese patients mean and basal re-esterification rate were increased, whereas the norepinephrine-induced stimulation of lipolysis was reduced. The basal lipolysis of normal-weight subjects was independent of age, however, the stimulation of lipolysis induced by 0.1 μgnorepinephrine per ml was negatively correlated to the age of the patients. Basal and stimulated lipolysis was independent of age in obese subjects.

The diameter, volume, triglyceride content and number of adipocytes were determined in male Wistar rats at the age of 6 weeks and 2, 3, 12 and 18 months, respectively. A standard diet and water were given ad libitum. The adipocytes were isolated by means of the method of RODBELL. The weight and fat content of the fatty tissues were determined gravimetrically. Age exerts no effect on the adipocyte parameter, nor on the weight and the fat content of the fatty tissue. In contrast to this, there are relationships between adipocyte diameter and the increases in body weight. In all age groups, the increase in size and number of the adipocytes was significantly greater in heavy animals than in light ones. Genetic, hormonal and dietarily-induced factors are discussed as a possible cause. The authors observed no difference in adipocyte size between epididymal and perirenal fatty tissues. As compared to this, the mesenteric adipocytes were smaller.
