There is growing evidence of systematic underachievement of South African primary school learners in reading in English as the first additional language. There is a small but growing literature that provides insights, that is, causes, patterns and prevalence, into this phenomenon. Through a secondary analysis of a spelling component of a literacy test that was administered as an end-line assessment for a randomised control trial, this article provides new evidence for and insight into the patterns and prevalence of English language spelling errors made by Grade 4 second-language learners. The study specifically coded errors on four monosyllabic three-letter words for 2500 Grade 4 learners tested individually at the end of the second term in 2014. Three distinct linguistic error patterns were identified. The most frequent error patterns involved the incorrect use of the vowel grapheme, for example bed was spelled ‘bad’. The second pattern related to common errors associated with the transfer of linguistic, orthographic patterns from the first language (isiZulu). The final pattern suggests that between 6% and 8% of learners were struggling to make the basic phoneme–grapheme connection. This pattern, however, would need to be confirmed with oral interviews. The implications of these error patterns are discussed.

Learning process at senior high school still based on textbook oriented. It makes students less concerned with the environment especially the school environment where they study. Such condition requires a real action to solve so that the level of environmental awareness of the students is increased. This study aims to determine the relevance of research on teaching materials, ethno pedagogics, and careness of environment character as well as the effectiveness of ethno pedagogic-based-teaching materials on careness of environment character for senior high school students based on literature review. This study uses the literature review method to obtain the data. Teaching materials provide added value when sourced from the environment around the school (ethnopedagogic). Ethnopedagogy–based-teaching materials will increase character cares for the environment of high school students.

AbstrakPendidikan karakter bagi siswa adalah untuk membentuk kepribadian yang hasilnya terlihat dalam tindakan nyata para siswa, yaitu dalam tingkah laku yang baik, jujur bertanggung jawab, menghormati orang lain, kerja keras, dan sebagainya. Di era globalisasi yang multikultural dewasa ini, maka pendidikan karakter sangat penting guna menjadi norma dalam kehidupan siswa. Pendidikan karakter menuntut pemimpin sekolah berwawasan yang baik terhadap implementasi pendidikan karakter di sekolah yang dipimpinnya. AbstractCharacter education for students is for shaping one's personality in which the results are seen in the actions of students such as good behavior, honesty, responsibility, respect for others and hard work. In the era of globalization and current multicultural context, character education is essential in order to become a norm in the lives of students. Character education requires school leaders to have a good insight into its implementation of character education in the schools they lead.
