The index-based method (GALDIT) has been established over the years for assessing the vulnerability of aquifers for saline water intrusion based on six parameters, i.e., groundwater occurrence, aquifer hydraulic conductivity, level of water table above the sea, distance from shore, impact of existing amplitude of saline water intrusion, and thickness of the aquifer. This method incorporates weight and the importance rating of factors to assess the vulnerable zones to saltwater. The objective of the present investigation is to simplify the GALDIT method as a procedure in vulnerability assessment of saltwater intrusion by substituting for the level of the water table above the sea with the more effective groundwater pumping rate in order to effectively represent the groundwater condition. Hence, the method is named as the GAPDIT method (BL^being replaced by BP^). The developed model was applied to a coastal aquifer in the hyper-saline lake vicinity of Urmia, Iran. The Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) was employed to enhance the prediction of vulnerability distribution. Thus, for every factor, a separate interpolated layer was plotted by empirical Bayesian kriging (EBK) method, and then, a final vulnerability map was derived overlaying the individual layers and their special weight application. The outcome revealed that the substituted pumping rate was justified in cases that water table data are not available and resultant maps showed reasonable correlation between the GALDIT and GAPDIT methods. Also, the derived maps revealed that the highest vulnerability exists in the northwest of the study area.

Tailings-derived mine drainage water that is neutral in character, has a high electrical conductivity and contains elevated sulphate, chloride and nickel concentrations, has caused deterioration in groundwater and surface water quality in the mining area of Hitura in Western Finland. This deterioration, and thereby the location of the contaminant plume, was recognized in the water chemistry in the form of a gradual change in ion composition from Ca-HCO 3 -type water towards a Mg-SO 4 -rich type. It was possible to define the extent of the pollution by using cluster analysis to distinguish between hydrochemically different regimes and performing an electrical sounding survey. The results indicated that contamination is most intense close to the tailings impoundment and is related to an esker complex running across this area. Nevertheless, the water in the eastern and southern parts of the area upgradient of the hydraulic head is uncontaminated and suitable for water supply purposes.

Toenemende verzilting is een grote complexe mondiale uitdaging die om een integrale aanpak vraagt. Om deze uitdaging aan te pakken is het Partnership Saline Water & Food Systems (SW&FS) opgericht door Netherlands Water Partnership en Netherlands Food partnership met als doel stakeholders bij elkaar te brengen. Het partnerschap heeft een globale campagne over verzilting geïnitieerd om het onderwerp beter op de kaart te zetten, een gedeelde agenda te formuleren en acties in de water-en voedselsector te stimuleren. In dit kader is er een infographic en een achtergronddocument gemaakt. Allereerst is er gebruikgemaakt van kennis en ervaringen uit het verleden om een integrale benadering na te streven voor het duurzaam aanpakken van de huidige uitdagingen op het gebied van verzilting. Vervolgens zijn aan de hand van casestudy's de huidige uitdagingen, impacts en oplossingen bestudeerd. Deze casestudies uit diverse regio's (Bangladesh, Argentinië, Bahrein, Egypte, het Aralmeer en Pakistan) benadrukken de veelzijdige impacts van verzilting en stellen regio specifieke oplossingen voor, waaronder alternatieve zoetwaterbronnen, efficiënte irrigatie, ontzilting en drainagebeheer. Het volledige overzicht van de effectiviteit van deze oplossingen moet nog blijken, gezien het feit dat verzilting blijft toenemen als gevolg van, onder andere, klimaatverandering. Het is van cruciaal belang om een integrale en adaptieve aanpak te hanteren die preventie-en aanpassingsstrategieën combineert en tegelijkertijd de complexiteit van de uitdagingen op het gebied van verzilting erkent. Geïntegreerde benaderingen zoals de Food System Approach en Integrated Water Resources Management kunnen kaders bieden voor het beheer van watervoorraden en het waarborgen van duurzame voedselsystemen. Robuust waterbeheer, beleidsinterventies en maatregelen om klimaatverandering tegen te gaan zijn essentieel om de voedselzekerheid, het levensonderhoud en de ecosystemen te behouden in het licht van veranderende zoutgehaltes.The increasing salinity levels in water and soil have emerged as critical global challenges, needing a contextspecific solutions. Salinisation, characterised by salt accumulation, demands an integrated approach that incorporates the causes, sources of salts, the extent of salinisation and socio-economic context. To tackle this problem, the Saline Water & Food Systems (SW&FS) Partnership was established with the aim of bringing stakeholders together. The partnership has initiated a worldwide campaign on salinity, seeking to raise awareness, formulate a shared agenda, and stimulate actions in the water and food sectors. In this context an infographic was created and a background document containing more in-depth information. First, past knowledge was examined to facilitate the development of an integrated approach to address the current salinity challenges.
