The current state of medical simulation in interventional cardiology: A clinical document from the Society for Cardiovascular Angiography and Intervention's (SCAI) Simulation Committee

Abstract: Objectives: To assess the current use and application of simulators in interventional cardiology. Background: Despite a paucity of data on the efficacy of simulation in medicine, cardiovascular simulation training is now a mandated part of cardiovascular fellowship training. Additionally, simulators have been endorsed by the Food and Drug Administration as a way to teach physicians new and novel procedures. We sought to establish the current use of simulators in cardiovascular medicine. Methods: A systematic r… Show more

“…SBME in surgical fields has been shown to decrease time to anastomosis and quality of task performance in novice and advanced surgeons, and result in steady improvement in skill acquisition in laparoscopy; successful outcomes have led to a substantial research base in how simulation can be best used to improve performance . Similarly, in interventional cardiology, use of SBME has flourished since the recent publication of a systematic review and white paper from the Society for Cardiovascular Angiography and Intervention's Simulation Committee . Unfortunately, few avenues currently exist for trainees to develop EP procedural skills using simulation and these are generally based in virtual reality .…”

“…Over the past decade, technology has rapidly outpaced Graduate Medical Education (GME) curricular advances. Many innovative, educational thought leaders are responding by integrating the power of technology in the form of new high-fidelity simulators [1,2]. Simulationbased medical education (SBME) only recently began gaining relevance even though there has been literature since the early 70s.…”

“…The Society for Cardiovascular Angiography and Intervention (SCAI) has taken on a leadership role with its recent white paper, becoming the first society to make formal recommendations on SBME [2]. They conclude that "simulation will likely take on a larger role in cardiovascular training and maintenance of certification" with four specific recommendations: (1) In collaboration with the ACC, ABIM, and SCAI, develop standardized cases that embody the psychomotor and knowledge-based skill sets required of advanced cardiovascular trainees; (2) Integrate the standardized cases into current ACGME and COCAT's requirements, while improving access and availability to trainees and all simulation platforms; (3) Initiate large scale studies assessing feasibility and efficacy of SBME, and the reliability and validation of SBME as a tool for maintenance of competency; (4) Formal simulation training should be included in annual scientific sessions and integrated into future training programs.…”
