The Current State of Fat Grafting

Abstract: Background Interest in and acceptance of autologous fat grafting for use in contour abnormalities, breast reconstruction, and cosmetic procedures have increased. However, there are many procedural variations that alter the effectiveness of the procedure and may account for the unpredictable resorption rates observed. Methods The authors highlighted studies investigating the effects of harvesting procedures, processing techniques, and reinjection methods on the survival of fat grafts. This review focused on t… Show more

“…Furthermore, some patients simply do not have adequate donor sites, especially if they have previously undergone liposuction. Complications of the donor sites are rare, but irregularity of the surface could occur, particularly when an excessive volume liposuction is performed in skinny patients [118]. …”

“…To truly compare the efficacy of one of these techniques over another, a single study that utilizes the same outcome metrics and units of measure is required. In addition, while optimized fat graft retention relies, at least in part, on the viability of harvested adipocytes [52], the maintenance of volume correction conferred by fat transfer likely also relies on fibrotic ingrowth and ghost cells [20]. …”
