The current distribution in Poland of some European neophytic bryophytes with supposed invasive tendencies

Abstract: The paper presents a brief review of published so far and recently recorded unpublished bryological data concerning the distribution in Poland of two neophytic (sensu Meusel 1943) mosses: Campylopus introflexus (Hedw.) Brid. and Orthodontium lineare Schwaegr.to estimate their current influence on native bryoflora. The data clearly indicate the constant spreading of these species towards the east, however, there is no direct evidence that they have been limiting the occurrence of native moss s… Show more

“…Currently, it is known from numerous localities, mostly in western Poland (FuDAli et al 2009). Still, there are new ones that have been found (Wolski 2011, PiwowArski 2013, stAniAszek-kik 2014a, Górski & kAPustyński 2015a, sMoczyk 2015.…”

“…This neophytic species in Europe, regarded as an aggressive invader in managed coniferous and mixed forests as well as in drained bogs, seems to be distributed widely in western Poland, especially in West Pomerania, in Lubuskie Lakeland, and in the Wielkopolska region (FuDAli et al 2009, sMoczyk 2015. However, in the area of Lower Silesia (south-western Poland), it was recorded only in forests of Bory Dolnośląskie (steFAńskA et al 2006).…”

“…In Europe 21 non-native moss species (1.6% of the European moss flora) and 11 cryptogenic species (0.8%) have been identified (Essl and Lambdon 2009). In Poland, there are three alien moss species (0.4% of the Polish moss flora), namely Campylopus introflexus, Orthodontium lineare and Leptophascum leptophyllum (Ochyra et al 2003;Fudali et al 2009). The first of these is the most highly invasive and is listed among the 100 most prominent alien invaders (Lambdon 2009).…”

“…By 2016 30 years had passed since the first record, presenting a good opportunity to summarize data on the invasion and ecological preferences of this moss in Poland. Moreover, production of a distribution map in this country was attempted nearly 10 years ago (Fudali et al 2009). The present study aims to answer the following main questions: (i) what is the current distribution of C. introflexus in Poland and what was the dynamic of its spread?…”
