The culture of neural stem cells

Abstract: A stem cell has three important features. Firstly, the ability of self-renewal: making identical copies of itself. Secondly, multipotency, generating all the major cell lineages of the host tissue (in the case of embryonic stem cells-pluripotency). Thirdly, the ability to generate/ regenerate tissues. Thus, the study of stem cells will help unravel the complexity of tissue development and organisation, and will also have important clinical applications. Neural stem cells (NSCs) are present during embryonic dev… Show more

“…1e). Both tumour cells and neural stem cells exhibit similar growth characteristics in vitro: both proliferate in serum-free, Neurobasal media and form non-adherent neurospheres, a characteristic of neural stem cells and neuroepithelial tumours in humans (Reynolds & Weiss, 1992;Ahmed, 2009) (Fig. 1a, b).…”

“…Neurosphere-derived cells show the capacity for self-renewal, nestin immunoreactivity, and the ability to differentiate into neurons, astrocytes, and oligodendrocytes (34). After 2 days of monolayer culture, the cell population consisted mainly of nestin-positive radial glia-like cells, which coexpressed Zac1 and Tcf4 (Fig.…”
