The cryogenic MOS unit for LUCIFER

Abstract: The LUCIFER MOS unit has been designed to exchange long-slit and multi-slit masks between two mask storage cabinets and the focal plane area. In combination with auxiliary cryostats, the MOS unit also permits the exchange of cold mask cabinets between LUCIFER and the auxiliary cryostats. Main functional components of the MOS unit are: a focal plane interface accepting the active mask, a mask handling unit transporting the masks between the focal plane mount and their storage locations, a stationary and an exch… Show more

“…16,17 Multi-object NIR spectroscopy has become the most frequently used observing mode of LUCI1 allowing large samples of high redshift extragalactic objects to be studied simultaneously. The MOS Unit consists of a storage unit that is comprised of an exchangeable cassette holding 23 custom masks plus another 10 masks consisting largely of the permanent long-slits, a focal plane unit (FPU) that positions the mask in the LUCI focal plane with high positional accuracy and repeatability, and a mask handling robot that carries the individual masks between storage and the FPU, all of which operate in a vacuum at cryogenic temperatures.…”

“…It is anticipated that one LUCIFER will be LUCIFER will have excellent sensitivity across the entire 0.9-2.5 µm spectral range. The instrument is capable of the following observing modes: (1) seeing-limited imaging over a 4 field of view; (2) seeing-limited long-slit spectroscopy across a 4 long slit and a resolution ≥ 5,000 for OH suppression; (3) seeing-limited multislit spectroscopy for up to 24 targets (Hofmann et al 2004); (4) diffraction-limited imaging over a 30 × 30 field of view; and (5) diffraction-limited long-slit spectroscopy in J, H, and K with spectral resolutions up to ∼40,000. An integral field unit can be implemented at a future date.…”
