On the current 1 assumption of equal interaction between all pairs of elementary particles one can calculate for certain isobars the mass difference which is to be expected from Coulomb forces alone. These nuclei are of the type (n-p) = zhl, i.e., they contain an excess of one proton or one neutron. It is possible to assign the entire binding energy difference in these cases to the Coulomb repulsion alone, for it is assumed that the ground states of both members are symmetrical in the neutrons and protons, and therefore specifically nuclear forces will contribute equally to the binding of the isobars. Since the effect of the extra proton in the nucleus (n -p) = -1 is to increase the Coulomb repulsion, there will be a decrease in the binding energy and hence a tendency to emit positrons. The Coulomb energy may be calculated 2 on the assumption of a uniform distribution of charge throughout a nuclear volume which is proportional to the number of particles. Slight deviations from this approximation are to be expected when the 2p shell is completed at oxygen and again around neon when the 2s shell is filled. 3 If one assumes that the positron spectra are normal, it is possible to predict the half-life by using the fifth power dependence of the lifetime on the energy, a procedure which is justified by the calculations of Nordheim and Yost. 4 By determining the upper limit of the positron spectrum we may directly measure the difference in binding energy of two isobars of the type mentioned above. This is just equal to the maximum energy of the emitted particles plus the energy required to change a hydrogen atom into a neutron, plus the mass of an electron, plus the mass of the emitted positron. Nuclei of this character may be formed in a number of ways, one of which is the endothermic (p,n) reaction. The threshold of this reaction is just the above binding energy difference, and we are thus able to have two independent means of making the comparison with theory. It is clear that they can give different results only if the emission of the positron leads to an excited state which subsequently makes a gammatransition. In this case the reaction threshold is the most trustworthy method of investigation because it is difficult to determine the energy of the gamma-ray.Comparison of theory with experiment is quite satisfactory from Be 7 to F 17 , but prior to the work being here reported there was a gap in the experimental data from Ne 19 to Mg 23 , and beyond this point there exist large discrepancies. For example, Si 27 is reported to have a half-life of 6.7 min. where the theory would predict about 4 sec. Further the energy of the positrons is found to be 2.0 Mev and the expected energy is about 3.5 Mev. Al 25 is also in contradiction, for the reported half-life is 20 min. instead of the expected 6 sec.We have commenced a systematic study of these nuclei and have found that the reaction F 19 (p,n)Ne ld gives a radioactivity of approximately the expected half-life and upper limit. 1. Основные явления. Тщательный радиохими-ческий анализ радиоактивных элементов, образую-щихся в результате облучения урана и тория нейтро-нами, привел, как известно, Гана и Штрассмана [1] по уточнении ряда интересных особенностей, обна-руженных ими, Кюри и Савичем [2], к замечатель-ному результату. Им удалось с несомненностью до-казать, что одним из продуктов, получающихся при облучении урана нейтронами, является барий, в то время как согласно общепринятой к этому моменту схеме, предложенной Ферми с сотрудниками [3], в этих условиях должны были получаться трансураны.Исходя из описанных в указанных работах фак-тов, Мейтнер и Фриш [4] высказали предположение, что в результате захвата нейтрона ядром урана или тория происходит не испускание β -частицы, как по-лагал Ферми [3], но деление (или развал) составного ядра на две примерно одинаковые части. Механизм деления они, на основе боровской теории тяжелых ядер [5], представляют себе следующим образом. Поверхностная энергия [6] тяжелых ядер благодаря большому заряду будет, как показывает грубо при-ближенный расчет, весьма невелика. Поэтому воз-можно, что ядро урана мало устойчиво по отноше-нию к изменениям формы, и в результате возникно-вения колебаний ядра, возбужденных при захвате нейтрона, оно может распасться на два ядра пример-но одинакового размера. Электростатическое оттал-кивание этих двух ядер обусловит сообщение им ки-нетической энергии порядка 200 МэВ. Величина та-кого же порядка может быть получена, если исполь-зовать для расчета значения дефектов масс урана и элементов из средней части периодической сис-темы.Экспериментальное подтверждение этого пред-положения было опубликовано Фришем [7] в анг-лийском журнале «Природа» от 18/II 1939 г. (замет-ка -письмо редактору -датирована 16/I). В иони-зационной камере, покрытой внутри слоем урана и облучаемой нейтронами от радий-бериллиевого ис-точника в 300 мКи, появлялись мощные ионизаци-онные толчки. Линейный усилитель, присоединен-ный к камере, в свою очередь присоединялся к тира-трону, отрегулированному так, что он отвечал толь-ко на толчки, соответствующие не меньше, чем 5 · 10 5 парам ионов. Когда источник помещался на расстоя-нии 1 см от камеры, число толчков составляло около 15 за 1 мин.Окружение парафином источника нейтронов, по-мещенного на расстоянии 4 см от камеры, увеличи-вало эффект вдвое.Меняя регулировку тиратрона, можно было уста-новить, что наибольшие толчки соответствовали примерно двум миллионам пар ионов, при длине пу-ти ионизирующей частицы, эквивалентной не более 0,8 см воздуха. Принимая разумное соотношение между атомным весом и эффективным зарядом, из этих чисел для атомного веса осколка получается значение не менее 70.С торием были получены сходные результаты.
