The Credibility Revolution in Empirical Economics: How Better Research Design is Taking the Con out of Econometrics

Abstract: Since Edward Leamer's memorable 1983 paper, “Let's Take the Con out of Econometrics,” empirical microeconomics has experienced a credibility revolution. While Leamer's suggested remedy, sensitivity analysis, has played a role in this, we argue that the primary engine driving improvement has been a focus on the quality of empirical research designs. The advantages of a good research design are perhaps most easily apparent in research using random assignment. We begin with an overview of Leamer's 1983 critique a… Show more

“…However, exclusion restrictions "are motivated by subject matter, that is economic, rather than statistical, knowledge" (Imbens 2010, p. 403), as is evident from the review in Section 2. The most influential studies in the literature on the fundamental determinants of development (Acemoglu et al 2001(Acemoglu et al , 2002 are regarded as providing good examples of historical natural experiments generating quasi-random variation in fundamental determinants (Angrist and Pischke 2010;Fuchs-Schuendeln and Hassan 2015). Judgements on the plausibility of identification strategies rely primarily on the plausibility of their a priori theoretical arguments.…”

“…The most common relationship is linear meaning that any change in the explanatory variable will have appositive correlated with the dependable variable. This is why the multiple linear regression model is the most used tool in econometric because it expresses relationship linearly [7].…”

“…Within academia, the RCT is now widely considered a part of the economist's empirical toolkit (Angrist and Pischke 2010); beyond academia, RCTs are often used to determine government policy as well as guide decisions in large international organizations (Parker 2010;Council of Economic Advisors 2014).…”
