The COVID‐19 pandemic: key considerations for the epidemic and its control

Abstract: The response to the ongoing COVID‐19 pandemic has been characterized by draconian measures and far too many important unknowns, such as the true mortality risk, the role of children as transmitters and the development and duration of immunity in the population. More than a year into the pandemic much has been learned and insights into this novel type of pandemic and options for control are shaping up. Using a historical lens, we review what we know and still do not know about the ongoing COVID‐19 pa… Show more

“…Risk factors for severe manifestation and higher mortality include old age as well as hypertension, obesity, and diabetes [ 4 ]. Currently, COVID-19 continues to spread, new variants of SARS-CoV-2 have been reported and the number of infections resulting in the death of young individuals with no comorbidities has increased the mortality rates among the young population [ 5 , 6 ]. In addition, some novel SARS-CoV-2 variants of concern appear to escape neutralization by vaccine-induced humoral immunity [ 7 ].…”

“… 9 Given that children comprise 22% of the US population, 10 vaccine uptake in children is critical to protecting themselves and the community at large. 11 Although general (i.e., non–COVID-19) childhood vaccination rates in the United States have slowly increased in the past decade, current vaccination rates are impeded by COVID-19's impact on health care access and an ecosystem of generalized vaccine hesitancy. 12 Before the pandemic, children with ID were less likely to have completed recommended vaccinations, 13 , 14 as were children with autism (and their younger siblings).…”

“…Many of the planned surgical procedures were postponed due to the overload of hospitals and the caution of nosocomial transmission [ 13 , 14 ]. Even with optimistic predictions, the Covid-19 situation will continue for a long time [ 15 ]. The given necessitates use of RSs together with the use of artificial intelligence to decrease the number of involved surgical personnel [ 16 ].…”
