The course of peripheral neuropathy and its association with health-related quality of life among colorectal cancer patients

Abstract: Purpose To gain more insight into the course of chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) and its impact on health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in a population-based sample of colorectal cancer (CRC) patients up to 2 years after diagnosis. Methods All newly diagnosed CRC patients from four hospitals in the Netherlands were eligible for participation in an ongoing prospective cohort study. Patients (n = 340) completed questions on CIPN (EORTC QLQ-CIPN20) and HRQoL (EORTC QLQ-C30) before initial trea… Show more

“…We use data from the longitudinal PROCORE study that assessed CRC patients before treatment and at one-and 2-year follow-up. A recent publication on the course of (CI) PN using this dataset revealed that 57% and 47% of the sample that was treated with chemotherapy experienced clinically relevant sensory peripheral neuropathy (SPN) one and 2 years after diagnosis, respectively [20]. SPN was prospectively associated with significantly worse global HRQoL and worse physical, role, emotional, cognitive, and social functioning over time.…”

“…Ezzi et al [ 11 ] also showed that, of patients who underwent chemotherapy with cisplatin for at least 2 months at Kenyatta National Hospital oncology units, 56 patients (83.6%) had peripheral neuropathy; 45 patients (81%) had mild-grade (grades 1 and 2) peripheral neuropathy and only two patients (3.1%) had grade 4 neuropathy. The neuropathy symptoms may cause dose reduction [ 12 ], refusal to continue treatment [ 13 ], psychological distress [ 14 ], neurological impairment [ 15 ], and reduced quality of life (QoL) [ 16 , 17 ].…”

“…A holistic approach -including patient health education, dietary adjustment, nutritional supplements, aerobic exercise, and balance training -is needed to relieve the distressful peripheral neurological symptoms and emotional distress of CIPN during and after treatment for advanced LC. cause dose reduction [8], refusal to continue treatment [9], psychological distress [10], neurological impairment [11], and reduced quality of life (QoL) [12,13].Although previous studies have explored these issues, most research has focused on patients with colorectal cancer [14-16], breast cancer [17], or those in Western countries [18][19][20]; or on other chemotherapy regimens such as taxane [18,19], paclitaxel [19,20], or carboplatin [19,20]. Clinical observation indicates that LC patients treated with platinum-based regimens report CIPN-related symptoms that affect daily function and QoL, and insu cient attention has been devoted to this important topic.…”
