Exploring the relationship among dispositional optimism, health-related quality of life, and CIPN severity among colorectal cancer patients with chronic peripheral neuropathy

Abstract: Purpose Chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy ((CI)PN) becomes chronic in 30% of cancer patients. Knowledge of predictors of chronic (CI)PN and related impairments in health-related quality of life (HRQoL) is lacking. We examined the role of optimism in chronic (CI)PN severity and associated HRQoL in colorectal cancer (CRC) patients up to two years after diagnosis. Methods CRC patients from a prospective cohort study participated, with sensory periphe… Show more

“…This study indicated that trying to be hopeful and have a positive perspective have very important roles among MBC women. Similarly, in the study reported in this paper, positive thinking encouraged MBC women to optimize their perceptions of how they feel about life and medical treatment and guide them toward setting and achieving goals (Trompetter et al, 2022). Our results also concur with Ahmadi et al 's (2016) study.…”

“…In practice, a number of patients were included in the study who were previously diagnosed with cancer and/or already started treatment. In line with previous studies based on the PROCORE dataset [17,18] patients were excluded from data analysis if they were previously diagnosed with cancer and reported baseline EORTC QLQ-CIPN20 scores > 0 and/or had already started chemotherapy at baseline.…”

“…For this study, we only focused on SPN and MPN as APN is very uncommon in CRC [22]. In addition, as the item on hearing problems has been found unlikely to accurately identify PN [23], we calculated the SPN scale excluding this item [18]. In this study, Cronbach's alpha was 0.91 and 0.89 for the SPN subscale and 0.73 and 0.80 for the MPN subscale, at 1-year and 2-year follow-up, respectively.…”

“…Cancer also affects the psychological status of family members to varying degrees. In the diagnosis and treatment of cancer, the family members of cancer patients have a low sense of participation and existence, and have serious anxiety, hoping to give companionship and support to the patients when they experience pain [ 14 ]. The degree of anxiety and depression of the family members of some cancer patients is higher compared to the patients.…”
