The Correlation of the Bga Blood Group with the HL-A7 Leucocyte Group: Demonstration of Antigenic Sites on Red Cells and Leucocytes

Abstract: Antigenic sites of Bg^a specificity have been demonstrated on leucocytes as well as on red cells. The Bg^a group shows almost complete concordance with the histocompatibility group HL-A7. Red cells show much less activity than leucocytes and did not absorb cytotoxic antibodies but leucocytes removed all haemagglutinating activity. RNAP reactions can be demonstrated by both haemagglutination and cytotoxic tests. In some instances multispecific cytotoxic antibodies may show a monospecific haemagglutinating compo… Show more

“…However, Morton, Pickles, and Sutton (1969), using an AutoAnalyzer technique, showed a correlation between anti-Bga and HL-A 7 but the present series did not contain enough examples of anti-Bga to investigate this particular relationship. In this paper they suggested that manual methods are considerably less sensitive than those using the AutoAnalyzer and this may explain, at 4 least partially, our apparent failure to find the correlation indicated above.…”

“…Recently Morton et al [22] described the correlation between the Bga red cell antigen and the HL-A7 antigen: in the serum from 8 pregnant women, antibodies were found which reacted by an AA technique alone. A good concordance between the reaction of red cells and lymphocytes, the latter tested by lymphocytotoxicity, was found in Bg(a-|-) and Bg(a-) individuals.…”

“…Both specific and nonspecific reactions to other HLA antisera may also occur. Five patients were followed in detail and the reason for the increase in antigen strength was investigated without a conclusive result. The red cell antigens Bga, Bgb and Bgc are related to the HLA antigens B7, B17 and A28 [19,20]. The considerable varia tion in strength of reaction is one of the salient features of the Bg system, donors showing the strongest reactions can be de tected by manual methods either in saline or by the antiglobulin reaction [3,6,7,17] whereas other donors only react when the AutoAnalyzer is used [25], We have found that the relative antigen strength of our laboratory staff has remained unaltered over a period of many years.…”
