After an introductory course in experiential-integrative psychotherapy, 21 graduate students provided personal narratives of their experiences, which were analyzed using the grounded theory method. Results produced 37 hierarchically organized experiences, revealing that students perceived multiple changes in both professional (i.e., skill acquisition and learning related to the therapeutic process) and personal (i.e., self growth in a more private sphere) domains. Analysis also highlighted key areas of difficulties in training. By adding the personal accounts of graduate trainees, this study enriches and extends Pascual-Leone et al.'s (2012) findings on undergraduates' experiences, raising the number of cases represented in the model to 45. Findings confirm the model of novice trainee experiences while highlighting the unique experiences of undergraduate vs. graduate trainees.

Training novice psychotherapists: Comparing undergraduate and graduate students' outcomes

Aim: This paper describes and contrasts the impact of two 13-week counsellor training programmes in integrative-experiential psychotherapy; one with 24 undergraduate psychology students presented in this paper, and the other with archival data from Pascual-Leone and Andreescu's study of 22 clinical psychology graduate students. Method: The programmes taught psychotherapy to trainees who conducted single sessions with eight volunteers. Outcomes of these sessions were measured at four time points using both trainee and client reports. Findings: Undergraduate trainees significantly improved in fostering a therapeutic alliance, helping skills, and in their confidence (partial eta Sq. = .628). Most of this effect seemed to occur in the first nine weeks. When baseline scores were compared across the two training groups, undergraduate trainees were not performing as well as graduate trainees at fostering alliance and helping skills and this difference held throughout training (p's < .007). Implications: Despite differences, training was effective for both groups and undergraduates did seem to be closing the gap. Implications for further research and clinical practice are discussed.

ResumoIntrodução: No Brasil, a pesquisa em psicoterapia encontra-se em desenvolvimento inicial; ainda não há estudos sistemáticos do processo terapêutico, e poucas são as medidas disponíveis para os pesquisadores interessados nesse campo. Objetivo: Elaborar a versão em português do Psychotherapy Process Q-Set. Método: A elaboração da versão em português do Psychotherapy Process Q-Set envolveu quatro etapas: tradução, retrotradução, avaliação da equivalência semântica e discussão, entre os autores, dos resultados. Para a aplicação do instrumento, cinco avaliadores foram treinados. Durante o treinamento, registros no diário de campo eram feitos para identificar dificuldades na execução da tarefa e subsidiar dados complementares. Após, o Psychotherapy Process Q-Set foi aplicado em sete sessões de uma psicoterapia psicodinâmica breve para examinar a concordância entre os juízes. Resultados: A versão em português do Psychotherapy Process Q-Set apresentou boa equivalência semântica com a original. A avaliação da fidedignidade interavaliadores teve resultado satisfatório. Ressalta-se que a aplicação do Psychotherapy Process Q-Set requer estudo, tempo e reflexão. A discussão com os avaliadores apontou a necessidade de uma revisão do manual de aplicação no que diz respeito às vinhetas ilustrativas. Isto deverá ser realizado, futuramente, para minimizar as discrepâncias observadas no entendimento de alguns conceitos e para melhor adequá-las à realidade brasileira. Conclusão: O estudo disponibiliza a versão em português do Psychotherapy Process Q-Set, um instrumento versátil, que pode ser utilizado em diferentes contextos para descrever, quantitativamente e em termos clinicamente significativos, o processo terapêutico das diferentes psicoterapias. AbstractIntroduction: In Brazil, psychotherapy research is in its early development; there are no systematic studies of the therapeutic process, and there are few available measurement instruments for researchers interested in this field. Objective: To develop a Portuguese version of the Psychotherapy Process Q-Set. Method: The development of a Portuguese version of the Psychotherapy Process Q-Set involved four stages: translation, back translation, evaluation of semantic equivalence and discussion of the results by the authors. Five raters were trained to apply the instrument. During the training, a field diary was used to record difficulties identified in task execution and to subsidize complementary data. Thereafter, the Psychotherapy Process Q-Set was applied to seven sessions of a short-term psychodynamic psychotherapy to examine agreement between referees.
