The copepodid stages ofDrepanopus forcipatus giesbrecht, with notes on the genus and a comparison with other members of the family Clausocalanidae (Copepoda Calanoida)

Abstract: The post-nauphar developmental stages of the Calanoid copepod Drepanopus forcipatus Giesbrecht are described. They are compared with copepodids of other members of the family Clausocalanidae. The sequence of appearance and development of segmentation and setation indicate considerable conformity and point to a uniform familial pattern. Attention is drawn to a general pattern of addition of body segments and of segments in the first antenna and swimming legs. Comparison of integumental pore patterns of several … Show more

“…Samples were preserved in 4% formalin (Boltovskoy, 1981). The mesozooplankton organisms were identified to the lowest possible taxonomic level under a Wild M5 stereomicroscope, using the appropriate literature (Heron & Bowman, 1971;Lang, 1975;Bradford et al, 1988;Hulsemann, 1991;Mazzocchi et al, 1995;Boltovskoy, 1999).…”

“…An epicuticular extension of a limb segment is a denticle. Somites are numbered according to their relative developmental age, following Hulsemann (1991). Total length, measured in lateral view and given as prosome length/urosome length = total, includes caudal rami and rostrum but does not include the portion of the prosome that overlaps the urosome.…”

“…Stage-specific identification of D. forcipatus and C. australis was performed in accordance with descriptions by Hulsemann (1991) and Bradford et al (1988), respectively. Adult (C6) and copepodite stages (C1-C5) of both species were counted under a stereomicroscope (Leica M8).…”
