In addition to the real time plasma magnetic and kinetic control, process control is also very important for the operation of a Tokamak. Process control aims at the normal control of the plant systems including information sharing, schema of the Tokamak operation, and alarm handling. A new tokamak named "HL-2M" will be built during the next four years and many conceptual designs for the operation of the new device might be validated on HL-2A, which is currently running at SWIP Chengdu, China. For those purposes, we select the EPICS as the basis for the process control system of HL-2A. Some user interface, data management, and development tools are adopted such as control system studio (CSS), MS SQL Server, Matlab, LabVIEW, VC++, and Java. In this study, we will describe the initial design of the whole HL-2A/HL-2M process control system and its related achievements in HL-2A.

The Ion Source experiment, called SPIDER, is the first experiment to be realized in the ITER Neutral Beam Test Facility under construction at Consorzio RFX, Padova, Italy. Its data acquisition system will provide the collection of around one thousand signals at a sampling rate ranging from a few Sample/s to 10 MSample/s and of diagnostics and inspection images produced at a frame frequency from 10 to 150 frame per second, for beam durations of up to one hour.As the final product of the Test Facility will be the ITER Heating Neutral Beam Injector, we decided follow the ITER CODAC guidelines. Therefore the EPICS system provided in the CODAC Core System has been assessed and adopted in plant control. In addition to EPICS, the MDSplus system will be adopted for the overall data management. MDSplus can handle a rich set of data types and offers support for both local and remote data access in a variety of languages, a feature not fully supported by EPICS. All experiment data in SPIDER will be maintained in a single MDSplus database containing both experiment configuration and acquired data. The seamless integration of EPICS and MDSplus in a single system requires the development of some new tools, namely: A Channel Archiver which provides storage into MDSplus pulse files of data produced by EPICS Input Output Controllers (IOC) and exported as Process Variables via Channel Access; a set of IOC records providing direct access from IOC into MDSPlus files; A Channel Access Server to export MDSplus data as EPICS Process Variables, making them directly accessible by IOCs.We expect that the integration of the two frameworks will result in a system that combines the best features from each system, i.e. the management of distributed Process Variables via channel access and the IOC concept for EPICS, the sophisticated data management and remote access for MDSplus.

MDSplus is a data acquisition and analysis software package used widely throughout the international fusion research community. It was originally designed for use on pulsed experiments where experiment measurements are typically acquired by external measurement devices with local memory and then gathered by the data system after the pulse has completed. Today, more and more fusion research devices are being constructed which have very long pulse lengths. It is no longer acceptable to wait until the pulse completes before acquiring the measurements and making them available to the researchers. To explore the possibility of adapting MDSplus for use on experiments with long pulses, we have designed and implemented some prototype extensions to make MDSplus more suitable for those types of experiments. These extensions may be applicable in other areas such as data handling for fusion modeling codes. To implement these extensions, an additional API was developed to enable applications to store data incrementally in a node. The data is stored in a linked list of data segments in the MDSplus data file. An index of these data segments is maintained such that retrieval of subsets of the data can be performed efficiently without reading in the node"s entire data set. Prior to accessing this type of appended data, an application simply has to establish a time context consisting of a start time, end time and optionally a delta time using a simple function call. Once the time context is established, all the existing data retrieval functions in MDSplus behave as normally except that data from segmented records will only include those samples falling within the time window. MDSplus functionality provided by the expression evaluator is retained without modification.
