MDSplus extensions for long pulse experiments

Abstract: MDSplus is a data acquisition and analysis software package used widely throughout the international fusion research community. It was originally designed for use on pulsed experiments where experiment measurements are typically acquired by external measurement devices with local memory and then gathered by the data system after the pulse has completed. Today, more and more fusion research devices are being constructed which have very long pulse lengths. It is no longer acceptable to wait until the pulse compl… Show more

“…Data was collected using a combination of MDSplus [11], [12] segmented records and influxDB trends from the PLC based control system. MDSplus provided programmatic access to the trend data as well as the natively acquired signals, and grafana, the control system data viewer, had access to the MDSplus recorded signals as well as the influx recorded trends.…”

“…Also, MDSplus can provide a rich and easy-to-use data access interface, so scientific computing programs developed with C++, python, MATLAB, etc. can directly read data from the database [19]. The experimental data can also be accessed and displayed through an internet browser.…”

“…In 2007, long pulse extensions were added to MDSplus to handle this new requirement. [7] The MDSplus core development team has changed over the years in both size and personnel. Except for a two year period where several laboratories provided additional support for the porting of MDSplus to other operating system, the team that continued to development and support MDSplus has consisted typically of 3 or 4 people working part time on MDSplus while providing local computer support of the experiment operation at their laboratories.…”
