The SPARC Toroidal Field Model Coil (TFMC) experimental tests are described. The tests include detailed comparisons to a hierarchy of electromagnetic and structural models of the coil. The tests confirmed the ability of the no-insulation notwist (NINT) configuration to provide highly stable DC operations with peak magnetic field in excess of 20 tesla at the REBCO tape stacks. The advantages of the modular TFMC approach were validated including the ability to test and probe the REBCO and structural response of the coil in stages; a strategy that will be applied to large-scale coil production for SPARC. The electromagnetic models showed high fidelity agreement to the DC and charging coil performance in terms of current distribution, voltages and heating. The transient response of the TFMC to open-circuit events was examined. The coil exhibited the positive features of the NINT design with very low induced voltages and a predictable redistribution of current and resulting volumetric heating. However, highly localized damage occurred during a programmed open-circuit at operational conditions similar to those used in the SPARC tokamak, in agreement with calibrated electromagnetic models. This revealed the cause and remedy to the thermal instability that gives rise to the damage. Therefore, the conclusion of the tests is that the NINT TFMC was confirmed as meeting the programmatic requirements for SPARC and, more generally, for high field tokamaks.

The excellent wall condition is essential for fusion devices to generate reproducible high-parameter plasma. Wall conditioning techniques should be validated before applying on large fusion devices to reduce potential risk. Helimak, a toroidal steady state magnetic confinement device, was reassembled and upgraded to a technical validation platform for wall conditioning. A new control system has been developed to achieve the upgrade of Helimak. The control system is based on a distributed control architecture, which provides not only efficient development but also flexible control mechanisms. For each auxiliary subsystem, a corresponding local control module is developed to drive and control a variety of equipment. The control network ensures real-time transmitting of the parameters and data. A dedicated trigger network and timing control module can improve synchronization and real-time performance. Data acquisition system based on mature commercial busses provides sufficient data acquisition capabilities for diagnostic tools. The data management system uses MDSplus to provide convenient data access. An independent interlock and safety system is designed for comprehensive and reliable personal protection. After engineering commissioning, the Helimak has realized wall conditioning by electron cyclotron resonance heating (ECRH) plasma at different resonance positions. The flexibility of control systems allows the installation of more wall conditioning tools in the future that will provide the ability to validate combined wall conditioning techniques. Helimak will become a low-cost, reliable technology verification platform, which will help to achieve advanced scenarios in tokamak and stellarator.

MDSplus is a data acquisition and analysis system used worldwide predominantly in the fusion research community. Development began 31 years ago by a collaboration of software developers who were charged with providing a data acquisition system for three new fusion experiments under construction: CMOD at MIT, ZTH at LANL and RFX at Padova, Italy. The design of MDSplus combined the functionality of MDS (MIT/Model Data System developed at MIT for the Alcator and Tara fusion experiments) with new features suggested by the developers from the other laboratories. The development of MDSplus used a RAD (rapid application development) approach before RAD became a mainstream methodology. MDSplus was implemented and ready for the initial operation of CMOD in 1991. Since that time, many other fusion facilities started using MDSplus for data acquisition and/or for exporting their data to other sites. Today MDSplus is still used around the world for fusion energy research, space exploration and other fields of science and technology. Work on MDSplus continues to enhance its capabilities, support more platforms, and improve its reliability. It is anticipated that MDSplus will continue to provide valuable tools for the fusion energy research community. This paper describes some of the history of the MDSplus software, the work that is currently underway, and the plans to enable MDSplus to continue to be available and supported long into the future.
