The control of chiasma frequeney within a polyploid series in the genus Senecio (Compositae)

Abstract: Chiasma frequency in a polyploid series, and in the hybrids formed within it, are shown to be directly related to ploidy level, and to be independent of the apparent effective synapsis. The observations are related to previous observations and models on the control of chiasma frequency.

“…On the other hand, mean chiasma frequency is directly related to ploidy. This is especially clear in species of Senecio (Ingram and Noltie 1987). Such a relation is evidently nucleotypic in nature and likely to be manifest as a multiplicative effect.…”

“…These two suggestions need not be mutually exclusive because there can be no clear division between autopolyploidy and allopolyploidy, and the nature of the control of chromosome pairing in polyploids of this group is complex (Ingram & Noltie, 1987.…”
