The Contribution of Physical Geographers to Sustainability Research

Abstract: Abstract:A physical geographers' scope of practice is not defined by any regulatory or academic organization, so perception of the potential contribution of physical geography to sustainability research has been nebulous or informal, at best. In order to understand what physical geographers can do to enhance sustainability, this paper describes a systematic review of peer-reviewed research on sustainability published in three physical geography journals. The results show that physical geographers are active in… Show more

“…First, a variety of landscapes are represented, indicating the breadth of coverage where physical geographical research is concerned. As noted by [12], physical geographers are engaging with sustainability research from a range of locations, representing the natural world as well as the processes involved in a systems framework. Here, there are studies, including a few case studies and a case report, that examine agricultural fertilizers as contributing to nonpoint source pollution in China and flood resilience thinking in the retail sector of Taipei City, Taiwan.…”

“…In addition to the more established perspectives within physical geography, of spatial-temporal, holistic or integrated, and scale-based approaches, is an emergence now into adaptation research within sustainability (also noted by [12]), including urban sustainability (e.g., [11]). Moreover, because of the interdisciplinary perspective that is created by having several sub-disciplinary fields within physical geography, including geomorphologists, climatologists, soil scientists, biogeographers, and hydrologists, it is possible to include a breadth of research studies and expertise that stretches beyond most environmental disciplines.…”

“…Impoverishing LK and local cultural practices bring about psycho-social, cultural, economic and ecological degradation problems such as:A reduction in community involvement in protecting cultural and natural values, related to a progressive deterioration of the ecosystem, the diversity of land uses and landscapes (Day, 2017; Yinghe and Yeo-Chang, 2021), which widens the fracture between society and territory.A depreciation of the territorial values held by the local community, which can reduce the collective self-trust, identity, cohesion and community competence for resilience in economic or social crises (Aswani et al , 2018; Gandarillas, 2009). Increasing vulnerability towards territorial fracturing, environmental degradation and climate change (UNEP, 2016).…”

“…Because of the global and regional ecological and environmental changes and the challenges of sustainable human development, multi-and interdisciplinary research in earth surface system science via comprehensive and systematic methods is necessary to make fundamental contributions to sustainable development at national and global levels (Fu et al, 2015). When faced with global sustainable development, geography provides a practical target for the development of physical geography in the direction of subject development (Day, 2017a;2017b). With a focus on the coupling of theory and methodology of the human-earth system, the integration across various branches of physical geography, as well as the integration across physical geography, human geography, geographic information science, and other related disciplines, has become a hot spot of contemporary, frontier geography research (Fu and Li, 2016).…”
