The contribution of ecosystem restoration to sustainable development goals in Asian drylands: A literature review

Abstract: The multiple effects of ecosystem restoration programmes deserve attention. After reviewing the social-ecological effects of 23 ecosystem restoration programs in Asia's drylands, we find that these programmes mainly contribute to sustainable development goals (SDGs) synergistically, but the trade-offs between social-ecological effects still exist. Among the five goals of SDG15 (Life on Land), SDG13 (Climate Action), SDG6 (Clean Water and Sanitation), SDG1 (No poverty), and SDG2 (Zero Hunger), 11 programs can s… Show more

“…In other words, the capacity of resources and the environment is the basis and main determinant of the ecosystem and services in the Hexi Corridor. Previous studies have shown that the increase of vegetation in arid and semi-arid areas can fix the soil to a certain extent, but it will also bring greater vegetation evaporation, increase regional water consumption, and change the local hydrological characteristics and hydrological cycle process (Lian et al, 2021;Yao et al, 2021;Zhao et al, 2021). This is consistent with the changing trend of water conservation and soil conservation services in the opposite direction found in our study.…”

“…The United Nations has declared 2021-2030 as the Decade of Ecosystem Restoration, with a call for countries to achieve sustainable ecological management and meet the Sustainable Development Goals (Cowie et al 2018;Lu et al 2019;Peng et al 2020;Dubey et al 2021;Koh et al 2021). Ecological restoration is a direct adaptive response to degraded and destroyed ecosystems and has been widely implemented in global drylands (Aronson et al 2020;Zou et al 2020;Yao et al 2021). Local residents' environmental perception (EP) of changes in the environmental context is an indispensable form of evidence in the toolkit for monitoring, assessing, and revising ecological restoration programs (Bennett 2016).…”
