In terms of ecosystem structure, quality, and service, we have constructed a total of 18 characteristic evaluation indicators that could reflect the “state change interaction” of the ecosystem and analyzed the Spatio-temporal change of the ecosystem in Hexi Corridor from 2000 to 2020. The results show that: 1. The improvement of ecosystem and service is more obvious in the areas with a better ecological background in the East. The supply and regulation services of the ecosystem are synergetic. 2. In the past 2 decades, the ecological conditions of the Hexi corridor have improved as a whole, and the hot spots for improving ecosystem quality and services have gradually moved eastward. 3. Ecosystem changes have significantly changed the quantity and relationship of ecosystem services, showing strong spatial heterogeneity. For example, the loss of natural vegetation in the central and eastern regions with good ecological backgrounds has improved the water conservation service and also enhanced the synergy between it and the supply service. From the perspective of the relationship between ecosystem regulation services and supply services, the coordination characteristics are weakened, but the performance of regions with a poor ecological background in the west is just the opposite. In short, the typical climate characteristics of dry land with little rain and the spatial pattern of water resource shortage not only jointly determine the ecosystem background of the region, but also bring significant spatial differences and greater uncertainties to the relationship between ecosystem transformation and ecosystem services. Therefore, dryland ecosystem management and protection should be based on detailed and differentiated ecosystem assessment, taking into account regional natural resource endowment, giving priority to improving the stability of the regional ecosystem and gradually increasing regional ecosystem services.

Ecosystems across the globe, be it terrestrial, marine or transitional in nature are under pressure due to multiple drivers of changes including anthropogenic. Restoring the vitality of degraded systems is crucial for fulfilling the UN-Sustainable Development Goals in a timely manner. It is also essential for attaining the targets of the ambitious UN-Decade on Ecosystem Restoration (UN-DER). Riparian ecosystems are one among systems undergoing drastic changes due to anthropogenic pressures. They are a heterogeneous and biodiversity rich system due to its transitional zone occurrence between terrestrial and aquatic realms, including riverbanks, floodplains and wetlands, and provide ecosystem services on both local as well as global levels. Here we review the prospects of restoring riparian ecosystems in the context of the UN-DER. Even though the momentum for restoring riparian habitats began in the 1970s, our study reveals that intensive restoration programmes across the world are sparse and more efforts are needed to restore degraded riparian systems for regaining ecosystem health and complexity. Furthermore, an in-depth analysis of various strategies deployed for restoring riparian ecosystems around the world reveals that a participatory approach and site-specific strategies are needed for better output. Also, active along with passive restoration is required for better recovery. We suggest a three-stage strategy-preassessment, restoration activities and post monitoring and maintenance. It includes the involvement of stakeholders across all stages, which also supports their livelihoods. The restoration of riparian ecosystems supports the targets of UN-DER while providing both global as well as local ecosystem services.

Context Local residents’ environmental perceptions (EPs) of changes in environmental contexts are important for assessing ecological restoration programs and sustainable environmental management. Cross-scale research is necessary to understand the law of universality in ecological restoration. However, most studies have failed to analyse the indirect effects of environmental contexts on local residents’ EPs at the landscape level and have lacked cross-scale analysis of regional differences.Objectives The goal is to determine the regional heterogeneity of the direct and indirect impacts of landscape-level environmental contexts and individual-level characteristics on rural residents’ EPs.Methods We conducted a transect survey that included the eastern, middle, and western regions in China’s drylands, which have experienced ecological restoration. Multilevel linear models (MLMs) were applied to analyze the direct and indirect key driving factors at the individual level and the landscape level on rural residents’ EPs.Results Changes in the landscape-level environmental context can have indirect effects on both single EPs (i.e., perceptions of vegetation, humidity, sandy weather, soil quality, summer temperature, and precipitation) and composite EPs. The EPs are influenced by different landscape-level variables among the east, middle and west of China's drylands. For instances, humidity perception was influenced by precipitation only in the high aridity of western and middle regions; composite EPs were most indirectly impacted by vegetation.Conclusions These findings have important implications for understanding how landscape-level environmental contexts affect EPs; and they can inform differentiated assessments of ecological restoration programs in China’s drylands.
