The continuous lure of pediatric radiology

Abstract: Pediatric radiology is an immensely rewarding career choice. Eight pediatric radiologists, enthusiastic for their profession, were asked six questions about their career choice. Their responses illustrate the common virtues of pediatric radiology and also demonstrate the diverse paths and activities that pediatric radiologists take and pursue.

“…The question asked respondents, "How often do the following statements refer to you since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic and mandated social distancing was implemented?" (never, 0, to always, 4) b P<0.05 is significant colleagues, these unique aspects of pediatric radiology very much contribute to the joy felt by pediatric radiologists [15,16], much of which has been lost with mandated social distancing. Prior to the pandemic, isolation had been established as a potential driving factor for burnout in radiology.…”

“…Underrepresented minorities’ representation in pediatric radiology is perhaps more important than in most other areas of radiology. Together with interventional radiologists and breast imagers, pediatric radiologists are among the subspecialties with the highest patient interaction [ 17 ]. The arguments described here with regard to the advantages of having a diverse physician workforce directly apply to the pediatric radiologist as a patient-facing subspecialist.…”

“…Nurturing early interest, mentoring residents who are curious about the field, and highlighting the many advantages of the field are concrete interventions that improve recruitment. The recent publication by Strouse and colleagues [ 17 ] featuring interviews with eight pediatric radiologists who outlined the rewarding aspects of their careers is another example of how a practicing pediatric radiologist can contribute to recruiting the next generations of physicians. Additional efforts to capture the interest of junior residents and to mentor those individuals who manifest interest should be undertaken; these could include signaling opportunities for local community outreach and global health work, research grants for trainees, scientific and educational meetings, and opportunities to participate in committees as a trainee.…”

“…The importance of pediatric radiology and nuclear medicine is increasing. There is currently more demand for this subspeciality of radiology compared to the past [1]. Research in pediatric radiology and nuclear medicine is essential for continuous growth of this subspeciality and evidence-based practice to improve pediatric patient outcomes.…”

“…Hence, contributions 9 and 10 systematically review the radiological examination dose issue in children with congenital heart disease (CHD) and use of artificial intelligence (AI) for dose reduction, respectively. Nonetheless, pediatric radiologists seem more interested in AI for addressing their workload burden [1] because burnout in pediatric radiology is an increasing problem, as per the recent literature [5][6][7]. Contribution 11 reveals that the current AI technology is able to support less experienced pediatric radiologists in image interpretation, but further research is needed for its wide adoption.…”
