The consumption of our discontent

Abstract: The concept of 'sustainable consumption' is gaining interest as a key factor of sustainable development. This evokes issues of vested interests in continued economic growth versus change in lifestyle towards a less consumptive balance of work and leisure. It is shown that such a development is attractive to many people. It may still be stalled by various interest groups who actually thrive on an 'organized dissatisfaction'.

“…In this case, the excess income is turned into savings, which eventually end up as investments, further contributing to economic growth. Shifting income to leisure time (working fewer hours for a reduced income and having more leisure time) has been named as one of the potential areas for governments to address unsustainable consumption [11][12][13].…”

“…The pernicious effects of advertising is another area in which sustainable consumption scholarship presumably has something valuable to say, but has to date been relatively quiet. 7 A final recommendation, consistent with the view that household provisioning is necessarily embedded in a broader array of social practices, would be to analytically link sustainable consumption with current public discussions regarding working hours, leisure, and quality of life (Gatersleben, 2001;Jackson, 2005;Martens & Spaargaren, 2005;Reisch, 2001;Sanches, 2005;Sanne, 2005;Schor, 2005;Spaargaren & van Vliet, 2000). CONCLUSION Though the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) in the United States issued two reports that touched on the role of consumption as a driver of global environmental degradation during the lead up to the 1992 Earth Summit, scholarly work more generally did not play a prominent role in these initiatives.…”
