The Conceptual Basis for Dissemination and Implementation Research

Abstract: There are tangible benefits to the use of models to inform dissemination and implementation research. However dissemination and implementation scientists may find it difficult to select, adapt, and apply a model to their work. Guidance is provided on how to select a model, as answering several questions (e.g., the research question, scope of the study) can aid a research team in selecting a model. Given the large number of models available and the amount of work required to develop a new model, a dissemination… Show more

“…The coding framework was structured around the iPARIHS constructs (innovation (the evidence-based intervention), recipients, context, and facilitation) with associated subconstructs [17]. We applied iPARIHS in this specific setting to gain insight into the combination of factors required for successful implementation in this clinical care environment [20] and move toward precision implementation to ultimately better specify and tailor implementation strategies [24]. Subconstruct definitions were not available to standardize analysis; therefore, we developed a codebook (Additional file 3) to define subconstruct items using definitions drawn from the revised PARI HS framework [25], the Consolidated Framework for Implementation Research [26], and the Theoretical Domains Framework [27].…”

“…There are several theoretical frameworks available to provide conceptual and practical guidance on how to conduct effective knowledge translation (Tabak, Chambers, Hook, & Brownson, 2017). One commonly used framework, the RE-AIM framework, was developed in the field of public health and is primarily used in implementation science, which is not the focus of the current special section.…”

“…38 46 Dissemination and implementation models are essential for understanding and improving D&I processes and outcomes; they help to align research questions with appropriate constructs in order to explain why an EBI or D&I strategy does or does not work. 38 Figure 1 The complex interplay of the determinants of behaviour change. Behaviour change within a given socioecological level is dependent on a convolution of contextual factors.…”

“…Dissemination and implementation models (also sometimes described as frameworks) are a conceptual and organised combination of theories necessary to guide the planning and evaluation of EBIs and D&I strategies. 38 46 Dissemination and implementation models are essential for understanding and improving D&I processes and outcomes; they help to align research questions with appropriate constructs in order to explain why an EBI or D&I strategy does or does not work. 38 Moreover, studies framed within D&I models allow one to specify clear-cut objectives with theoretical underpinnings to provide a systematic approach to evaluating the D&I process across a spectrum of actors and diverse domains of determinants.…”
