The composition of coral reefs in Ulee Lheue breakwater, Banda Aceh, Aceh, Indonesia

Abstract: The present study was aimed to catalog the coral reefs that are found in Ulee Lheue breakwater, and providing a baseline data that will be valuable in Aceh marine conservation plan in the future. The research was conducted from February to October 2015. The station of observations was designed by systematic sampling. The sampling stations were located on the outer side and inner side the breakwater with a station spacing of 250 m. Furthermore, 50 m roll meter was used in each station as the reference to laying… Show more

“…The Acropora genus in the Tiaka Oilfield is dominated by tabulate and corymbosa forms, especially those that grow on reef flat and reef crest areas (Syakir et al, 2015). This type of coral has a relatively fast growth compared to other types of coral (Anderson et al, 2012;Fadli et al, 2019) this is due to the skeletal structure of Acropora coral is more porous (Rani et al, 2017), therefore, it is suitable to be applied in the rehabilitation of coral reefs (Mansyur et al, 2019).…”

“…Togean Island is the most dominant area of 78 species of Acropora corals, including the Togean endemic coral species, namely Acropora togeanensis (Khazali, 2007). According to Fadli et al (2019), corals of the Acropora genus are types of corals that require very high levels of water brightness and a constantly moving water mass (Panggabean and Setiadji, 2011). This is what underlies so that the Acropora genus is very dominant in the Tiaka Oilfield as its geographical location far from the main land causes high water brightness (100%) and supports the fulfillment of light requirements for the zooxanthella photosynthesis process (Syakir et al, 2015;Mansyur et al, 2019).…”

“…However, another report on the types of marine fish species in Simeuleu Island identified around 77 marine fish species which are members of 54 genera, 26 families, and seven orders (Batubara et al 2017). The reef-associated fish inventory at Ulee Lheue, Banda Aceh, also mentioned that there were 87 species of reef fishes from 28 families in this location (Fadli et al 2019). In different areas (i.e.…”

“…According to the Department of Marine and Fisheries of Aceh, the annual catch of marine fisheries was 209,642 tons in 2017 and increased to 283,676 tons in 2021 [2]. Coral reef fish constitute a significant portion of the catchment composition [3][4][5][6], with snappers (family Lutjanidae) being predominant [7]. The annual snapper catches in Aceh were 18,786.8 tons in 2017, increasing to 20,998.8 tons in 2021 [2].…”
