The compliance and burden of treatment with the epinephrine auto‐injector in food‐allergic adolescents

Abstract: The majority of food-allergic adolescents and their parents were positive about the EAI (=low BoT). However, the BoT was significantly associated with self-reported compliance with carrying the EAI. The BoT was higher in food-allergic adolescents prescribed an EAI who reported not carrying the EAI at all times. The BoT measure seems to be a useful tool to study compliance with carrying an EAI. The BoT of an EAI is not associated with HRQL. The BoT measures a distinct concept related to compliance behavior.

“…39 A study on the burden of EAI among adolescents with FA and their parents showed that the burden was not associated with QoL, perceived disease severity, illness perception or trait anxiety, but it was associated with self-reported compliance with carrying the EAI. 40 Although there have been suggestions that anxiety may be beneficial to improve compliance, some data reported that anxiety did not improve adherence to FA-management plans. As anxiety increases, probably any protective effect disappears.…”

“…In emergencies, the treatment of peanut allergy consists of using an epinephrine auto-injector (EAI). This should be carried at all times, but is not always the case (Sampson et al 2006, Gallagher et al 2011, 2012, Marrs & Lack 2013, Saleh-Langenberg et al 2016. For safety reasons, it is important to identify situations with high risk of anaphylaxis and to learn how to react appropriately.…”

“…For example, carrying the Epinephrine auto-injector is a vital tool in keeping the child safe and it is the parent who takes this responsibility for younger children. Later on, it is the responsibility of the teenager and the young adult to ensure that the auto-injector is always available [15][16][17][18].…”
