Background Escherichia coli is the most common cause of urinary tract infections (UTIs), especially in young women. 1 E. coli is responsible for more than 80%-90% of UTI among the community and 30%-50% in the hospitals. In addition, this bacterium is one of the main causes of hospitalization with significant complications and high health care costs. 2 The verotoxigenic E. coli (VTEC) strains secrete a type of toxin which is called verotoxin due to its ability in killing Vero cells. Further, because of the similarity of verotoxin to the Shiga neurotoxin which is secreted by Shigella dysenteriae, type I is called Shigalike toxin and the strains which secrete it are referred to as Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC). 3 Furthermore, the verotoxins are categorized into stx1 and stx2 groups. These toxins inhibit the synthesis of proteins through affecting the ribosomal RNA, and the types of E. coli that produce these toxins are called STEC. The STEC strains are an important group of zoonotic and foodborne pathogens in human that can cause various diseases such as bloody diarrhea, hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), and thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP). 4 A number of current studies have shown that about 20 000 instances of infection and 250 cases of death are annually reported due to the consumption of contaminated foods by STEC in the United States. 5 Today, it is well known that STEC is intermittently isolated from cattle and sheep stools, and as a result it can contaminate the meat of these animals. 6 Objectives This study sought to examine the presence and expression of the stx1 gene in E. coli isolated from women with UTI in Tabriz. Materials and Methods Sample Collection A total of 25 E. coli isolates were evaluated in this study, which were identified in our previous studies by the biochemical tests administered to women with UTI. Bacillus(B) cereus is regarded as a major foodborne pathogen which is widely distributed in the nature. In addition, it plays an important role in the contamination of ready-to-eat and dairy products. B. cereus causes the two different types of food poisoning in human: the diarrheal and the emetic type. The aim of this study is detection of hbl complex genes in B. cereus isolated from cow raw milk in Northwest of Iran. In the present study, the number of the samples collected from cow raw milk were 120. All the isolates already had been identified phenotypically, and they were assessed for molecular confirmation by using the PCR method. B. cereus isolates were determined by detecting the hbl genes complex in the isolates. The result of this study showed that B. cereus were found in the raw milk samples 117 (97.5%) from the 120 samples. The frequency of the hblA, hblC, and hblD genes found in B. cereus isolates were 105 (89.7%), 102 (87.1%), and 102 (87.1%) , respectively. 99 isolates (84.6%) harboured 3 tested genes simultaneously. 12 B. cereus isolates (10.3%) lacked these genes. The results of current study showed that B. cereus isolated from raw milk have high potential in causing food poisoning and therefore the use of the procedures to reduce the bacterial contamination during the processing of dairy product is required.

Background: Bacillus cereus is a gram-positive and spore-forming bacterium which is widespread in nature. It also has been known as a major foodborne pathogen that often plays a role in the contamination of ready-to-eat and dairy products. It causes two different types of food poisoning in human: the diarrheal type and the emetic type. Objective: The current study was planned to determine the prevalence of ces and cytk genes of Bacillus cereus isolated from raw milk in Tabriz, Iran. Materials and Methods: In this study, 40 B. cereus strains isolated from cow raw milk, that had already been identified phenotypically, were assessed for molecular confirmation by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) method. Then, they were evaluated for presence of ces and cytK genes by specific primers. Results: Of 40 B. cereus strains, 39 strains were confirmed molecularly. The frequency of cytK and ces genes was reported 38 (97.43%) and 0 (0%), respectively. Conclusion: The results of present study showed that B. cereus strains isolated from raw milk had high potential in causing diarrhea poisoning. Therefore, using procedures to reduce the bacterial contamination during the processing of dairy product is essential.
