Gingivitis is an infection caused by plaque and calculus accumulation. Gingivitis if not treated progress to periodontitis, a more advanced form of gum disease. Periodontal disease was the world's 11th most frequent disease in 2016 according to the World Health Organization. Surgical as well non- surgical periodontal therapies are carried out for periodontal disease treatment. Debridement of supra-gingival and sub-gingival calculus, along with instructions about oral health care methods are the basis of traditional non-surgical periodontal therapy (NTPS). Honey is beneficial to oral health, particularly in the cure of plaque formation, gingiva inflammation, periodontitis and odor control. Honey has antibacterial activity and is effective against both gram-positive as well as gram-negative bacteria. Honey's antibacterial and anti-inflammatory characteristics can promote the granulation tissue formation and enabling damaged cells to be regeneration. Materials And Method: This review followed the guided framework from the approach of Arksey and O'Malley for the scoping review (2005). The methodology was chosen because it has a five-stage framework. Exclusion & inclusion criteria were made and 60 articles were selected. Articles were searched from the PubMed, Google Scholar and other search engines. Results: Based on the data retrieved we concluded that honey can be used as a medium for non-surgical periodontal therapy. Honey have antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties due high osmolarity, acidic nature and hydrogen peroxide as well non-peroxide components of honey and is used by many researcher for cure of periodontal disease but still there is not very strong evidence that locally given honey affects periodontal tissue healing. Despite this, all of the pockets had a good periodontal repair. Honey's efficacy in the treatment periodontal disease is still not well established and still questionable. To substantiate these findings from the literature, more research will be required.

The successful application of honey in wound care management has been achieved due to honey’s potent antibacterial effects, characterised by its multifactorial action. Impressive clinical efficacy has ignited its further use in diverse clinical disciplines, including stomatology. Indeed, there is increasing usage of honey in dental medicine as a preventive or therapeutic remedy for some periodontal diseases mainly associated with bacteria, such as dental caries, gingivitis and mucositides. Dental caries is undoubtedly a major oral health problem worldwide, with an increasing tendency of incidence. The purpose of this perspective review is to describe the recent progress in the laboratory and clinical use of honey in the prevention of dental caries, with emphasis on the antibacterial and antibiofilm effects of honey. The role of honey in the cariogenic process is also discussed. In addition, the quality of honey and the urgent in vitro evaluation of its antibacterial/antibiofilm properties before clinical use are highlighted. Findings based on data extracted from laboratory studies demonstrate the pronounced antibacterial effect of different honeys against a number of periodontal pathogens, including Streptococcus mutans. Although the promising antibiofilm effects of honey have been reported mainly against S. mutans, these results are limited to very few studies. From a clinical point of view, honey significantly reduces dental plaque; however, it is not superior to the conventional agent. Despite the positive in vitro results, the clinical effectiveness of honey in the prevention of dental caries remains inconclusive since further robust clinical studies are needed.

Plak merupakan substansi berwarna kuning keabuan yang melekat erat pada permukaan gigi. Plak dapat dikontrol secara mekanik dengan menyikat gigi dan secara kimiawi dengan berkumur menggunakan larutan kumur seperti larutan madu dan larutan teh hijau, karena memiliki daya antibakteri yang dapat membunuh bakteri penyebab terbentuknya plak gigi. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui perbedaan efektivitas berkumur larutan madu dan larutan teh hijau terhadap penurunan indeks plak. Jenis penelitian ini adalah pre-eksperimental dengan disain two group pretest-posttest group. Sampel penelitian ini adalah 25 orang mahasiswa Fakultas Kedokteran Gigi Universitas Andalas yang memenuhi kriteria inklusi. Penelitian ini dilaksanakan selama dua hari dengan sampel yang sama. 25 orang sampel berkumur menggunakan larutan madu pada hari pertama dan larutan teh hijau pada hari kedua. Larutan madu dan larutan teh hijau yang digunakan yaitu larutan dengan konsentrasi 5%. Analisis data menggunakan uji statistik Wilcoxon dan Mann-Whitney. Hasil uji statistik Wilcoxon menunjukkan perbedaan yang bermakna pada skor indeks plak antara sebelum dan sesudah perlakuan pada kedua kelompok dengan nilai p=0,000 (p<0,05). Hasil uji statistik Mann-Whitney menunjukkan tidak adanya perbedaan yang bermakna antara kedua kelompok perlakuan dengan nilai p=0,337 (p>0,05). Kesimpulan penelitian ini yaitu larutan madu dan larutan teh hijau sama-sama efektif dalam menurunkan indeks plak.
