The combined extraction of sage (Salvia officinalis L.): Ultrasound followed by supercritical CO2 extraction

Abstract: A wide spectrum of phytochemicals could be isolated from sage (Salvia officinalis L.) using different extraction or distillation technique: the supercritical fluid extraction (SFE), the volatiles compounds (monoterpenes and sesquiterpenes) isolation using hydrodistillation or higher molecular compounds with Soxhlet extraction or ultrasound-assisted extraction. The combination of ultrasound-assisted extraction followed by re-extraction of obtained extract with supercritical CO(2) was performed in this study. Th… Show more

“…The combination of ultrasound-assisted extraction followed by re-extraction of obtained sage extract with SC CO 2 was also performed. This procedure gave two valuable products: the ultrasound extract which was rich in sugars and SFE extract which was rich in terpenoids [97]. The influence of process parameters, such CO 2 density and extraction time, on the composition of sage extracts was also studied.…”

“…Several methods are available for extraction of phenolic compounds from plants, including solvent extraction, ultrasound-assisted extraction, microwave-assisted extraction, and supercritical fluid extraction (Glisic et al, 2011;Hossain et al, 2012;Caxambu et al, 2016). Of these methods, ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) technology has gained increasing popularity due to its advantageous properties, including high extraction efficiency, good reproducibility, low solvent consumption, speed, low cost, environmental friendliness and easy scale up for industrial applications (Tao et al, 2014;Cravotto et al, 2008;Vinatoru, 2001;Vuong et al, 2014).…”
