The coastal fishes of Madeira Island-new records and an annotated check-list

Abstract: A check-list of the coastal fishes of Madeira Island is presented. The species Rhincodon typus, Megalops atlanticus, Apterichtus caecus, Apterichtus sp., Chelidonichthys lucernus, Caranx crysos, Lutjanus goreensis, Crystallogobius linearis, and Canthidermis sufflamen are recorded for the first time from Madeira waters. We have recognized 13 previous records as identification errors or registration errors and indicate 14 other records as doubtful. Including the nine new records, we list 226 species from the coa… Show more

“…Fish fauna from Cape Verde contain many tropical species. A recently updated check-list of the coastal fishes of the Cape Verde Islands lists 315 species, 20 of which (6.3 %) appear to be endemic to the archipelago (Wirtz et al 2013).…”

“…Among the 21 species of Gobius-Mauligobius recorded from the eastern Atlantic and the Mediterranean, 16 have a subtropical or temperate affinity and only five are restricted to the tropical Atlantic along the western African coast (Brito and Miller 2001;Miller 1990): Gobius ateriformis Brito and Miller 2001;Gobius rubropunctatus Delais 1951; Gobius senegambiensis Metzelaar 1919; Gobius tetrophthalmus Brito and Miller 2001;Mauligobius nigri (Günther 1861). Despite significant progress in the systematics and biodiversity of gobies from the eastern tropical and subtropical Atlantic (Miller 1978(Miller , 1981a(Miller , 1984(Miller , 1988Van Tassell 1988Van Tassell et al 1988;Miller and Smith 1989;Brito and Miller 2001;Kovačić and Schliewen 2008;Schliewen and Kovačić 2008;Schliewen 2011; Tassell and Kramer 2014) many more species of gobies will likely be discovered in targeted collection efforts along the relatively unexplored West African coastline (Kovačić and Schliewen 2008;Wirtz et al 2013).…”

“…Sixty taxa have been recorded from the Ionian Sea and 76 from the south Aegean Sea, including the fangtooth moray eel Enchelycore anatina (Lowe, 1839) (Muraenidae). This species is widely distributed in the Atlantic Ocean but seems to be primarily limited to island waters (Böhlke, 2002), including the Canaries (Sangil et al, 2009), Madeira (Wirtz et al, 2008), and St Helena (Edwards & Glass, 1987). The species was initially recorded in 1979 from the eastern Mediterranean Sea in Israeli waters (Ben-Tuvia & Golani, 1984).…”
