The co‐occurrence of anaemia and stunting in young children

Abstract: Anaemia and stunting are prevalent nutritional problems among children of low-income countries that have profound effects on development, morbidity, and mortality. Many use a single conceptual framework to identify the basic determinants of these and other forms of malnutrition. One would expect that problems with matching underlying determinants should co-occur in affected individuals to a greater degree than by chance. In 2 populations of children-ages 6-18 months in Bihar, India, (n = 5,664) and 6-36 months… Show more

“…This study was carried out to determine if childhood anaemia and stunting co-occur beyond what is expected in Ghana and that their co-occurrence is spatially distributed. Similar to earlier studies ( Albalak et al, 2000 ; Castejon et al, 2004 ; Gosdin et al, 2018 ), we found no significant difference between the observed and expected frequency of co-occurrence of stunting and anaemia in the pooled data as well as for the different children's age groups. The co-occurrence of stunting and anaemia (CAS) was, however, spatially clustered in selected regions of Ghana.…”

“…This suggest that, these conditions should be treated independently of each other ( Albalak et al, 2000 ; Castejon et al, 2004 ). A more recent study in Peru found the frequencies of co-occurrence to be similar to frequencies expected by chance ( Gosdin et al, 2018 ). Analysis of data from 46 low- and middle-income countries showed that though there is a wide range for the prevalence of co-occurrence of anaemia and stunting in these countries, overall the condition is highly prevalent ( Duc Tran et al, 2018 ).…”

“…Castejon et al [15] reported a 5.9% CAS prevalence in Venezuela. CAS prevalence was 21.5% in India and 30.4% in Peru [16].…”

“…Thus, an intensive investigation is required to determine how and to what extent the nutritional statuses of women and children are associated with their anemia levels and whether the association is modified by other risk factors. Although some studies have [35, 36] tried to identify common factors associated with anemia and growth (measured by stunting, underweight and wasting in children and low BMI in women) through separate analysis of anemia and growth data, such an analysis may not be useful in identifying whether there is any association between growth and anemia. Against this backdrop, the current paper examines the association between anemia and stunting in under-five children and the association between anemia and BMI in childbearing women using nationally representative data extracted from the Bangladesh Demographic and Health Survey 2011.…”
