The clinical significance of a second transurethral resection for T1 high-grade bladder cancer: Results of a prospective study

Abstract: PurposeThis study was designed to estimate the value of a second transurethral resection of bladder tumor (TURBT) procedure in patients with initially diagnosed T1 high-grade bladder cancer.Materials and MethodsBetween August 2009 and January 2013, a total of 29 patients with T1 high-grade bladder cancer prospectively underwent a second TURBT procedure. Evaluation included the presence of previously undetected residual tumor, changes to histopathological staging or grading, and tumor location. Recurrence-free … Show more

“…The fact that local tumor control and accurate tumor staging depend on a complete TUR and reevaluation of the tumor base suggests that a restaging TURBT may be of value in assessing patients with bladder tumors [ 21 , 22 ]. Re-TURBT reduces the uncertainty of the depth of tumor invasion, better controls the primary tumor, and provides additional pathologic information that may help to select appropriate treatment.…”

“…This may be due to aggressive tumor biology. In a similar study by Shim et al .,[ 11 ] 29 patients with T1 high grade disease underwent restage TURBT and 22 of these were found to have residual tumor. There were total of 9 recurrences during followup after restage TURBT, 7 of which were in the group that had residual tumor at restage.…”
