These nomograms would help clinicians evaluate flow rates over a wide-range of voided volume as well as age, enabling effective screening of women for voiding dysfunction, and evaluating response to medical or surgical treatment.
Uroflow parameters were higher in standing and squatting positions compared to sitting in individuals not accustomed to void in sitting position. Therefore, uroflowmetry should not be performed in a position the individual is not familiar with.
Aim. To explore the influence of Escherichia coli on the motility of human spermatozoa and its possible mechanism. Methods. Highly motile preparations of spermatozoa from normozoospermic patients were coincubated with Escherichia coli for 4 hours. At 1, 2 and 4 hours of incubation, sperm motility was determined. The factor responsible for sperm immobilization without agglutination was isolated and purified from filtrates.
Results. This report confirms the immobilization of spermatozoa by E. coli and demonstrates sperm immobilization factor (SIF) excreted by E. coli. Further this factor was purified by ammonium sulfate precipitation, gel permeation chromatography, and ion-exchange chromatography. Purified SIF (56 kDa) caused instant immobilization without agglutination of human spermatozoa at 800 μg/mL and death at 2.1 mg/mL. Spermatozoa incubated with SIF revealed multiple and profound alterations involving all superficial structures of spermatozoa as observed by scanning electron microscopy.
Conclusion. In conclusion, these results have shown immobilization of spermatozoa by E. coli and demonstrate a factor (SIF) produced and secreted by E. coli which causes variable structural damage as probable morphological correlates of immobilization.
Patients with renal cell carcinoma have increased oxidative stress, which is effectively alleviated by curative resection. In patients with benign tumors antioxidant defense mechanisms maintain normal redox status.
Isolated renal mucormycosis in immunocompetent hosts is a rare entity. We present the largest case series of isolated renal mucormycosis in immunocompetent hosts. Retrospective data of isolated renal mucormycosis from March 2012 to June 2017 was reviewed. Fifteen patients of isolated renal mucormycosis were identified. Contrastenhanced computed tomography scan showed enlarged globular kidneys with decreased or patchy enhancement, perinephric stranding and thickened Gerota's fascia in all patients. Ten patients with unilateral involvement underwent nephrectomy and two of four patients with bilateral renal mucormycosis underwent bilateral nephrectomy. Two patients were managed with intravenous antifungal therapy alone. Overall, the mortality rate in our series was 40% (6/15). Isolated renal mucormycosis in healthy immunocompetent hosts is an emerging new entity. Prompt diagnosis based on the characteristic clinical and radiological picture and starting high-dose antifungal therapy at least 24 hours before surgical debridement offer the best chance of survival in these patients.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
