Within place theory, the research investigated relationships between activities carried out in a place and evaluative aspects of the same place. In the study, 152 inhabitants, ages 18 to 55, all living in the same neighborhood of Rome (Italy) were sampled by sex. An individual questionnaire included three scales to measure frequency of activities (23 items for neighborhood, 32 items for city center, and 11 items for suburbs) and a 47-item scale to measure degree of satisfaction/dissatisfaction toward various aspects of neighborhood. Multivariate data analyses identified four groups of inhabitants (neighborhood confined, marginal escape users, multiplace hyperactive, and quality users), each characterized by a specific pattern of multiplace urban activity. Each group was characterized by sociodemographic and/or residential variables. Finally, each group was also characterized by a specific pattern of neighborhood evaluations, with respect to three main aspects (building/population density and uninhabitability, social-spatial insecurity, and functional inadequacy/unavailability).

Environmental challenges, though daunting, present an important area for psychologists to apply their knowledge. Psychological theories, research methods, and interventions are essential for examining the questions about human impacts, tendencies, and capacities that are integral to constructing effective responses to these challenges. Although a great deal of relevant research has been done, there is scope for psychologists to be more extensively involved. Following a brief review of existing research, we outline some important new directions. We also highlight 2 key divergences, arguing that psychological research needs to expand beyond a traditional, theory-based and decontextualized approach to environmental issues to incorporate a contextualized or “place-based” approach and a willingness to collaborate in interdisciplinary research teams that focus on specific environmental problems. Suggestions for promoting such interdisciplinary collaborations are reviewed. We encourage psychologists to expand their engagement with important environmental issues through multiple research approaches in order to further their understanding of human behavior, contributions to human well-being, and relevance to other disciplines and to society.

Qu’est-ce qui motive aujourd’hui les citadins à résider dans une banlieue vieillissante ? Pour le savoir, nous comparons la première génération de résidents d’une banlieue édifiée dans les années 1950-1960 à ceux établis plus récemment, sur la base de leurs représentations cognitives du quartier et de la ville, ainsi que leurs identités spatiales. La recherche d’espace et de tranquillité des pionniers côtoie dorénavant la recherche de centralité et d’accessibilité aux services disponibles dans l’agglomération. Dès lors, les résidents récents ont une représentation multipolaire de la ville. Les lieux de leurs activités sont interchangeables et s’étalent sur un territoire plus étendu mais moins homogène que les pionniers. En revanche, ces derniers conservent une représentation de type centre-périphérie et valorisent la familiarité des lieux fréquentés. Somme toute, il n’existe pas une mais des logiques de mobilité quotidienne qui dépendent fortement de significations issues autant des représentations cognitives de l’espace que des identités spatiales.The aim of this paper is to gain an understanding of what motivates today’s city-dwellers to live in an aging suburb. The analysis compares the first generation in a suburb built in the 1950s-1960 with residents who have moved there more recently, based on their cognitive representations of the neighbourhood and of the city, as well as on their spatial identities, in order to explore the urban practices identified. The results indicate that the reasons for choice of living area have changed ; the quest for space and tranquility on the part of the initial settlers now coexists with the quest for central location and access to services available in the metropolitan area. The more recent residents now have a multipolar representation of the city. The places where they conduct their activities are interchangeable and are spread out over a broader but less homogeneous territory than in the case of the initial settlers. In contrast, the latter maintain a central / peripheral type of representation, and value the familiarity of frequented sites. As a result, there exist not one, but several systems of logic for daily mobility, which depend a great deal on meanings arising out of both cognitive representations of space and spatial identities
