The Circulating Levels of Cardiac Natriuretic Hormones in Healthy Adults: Effects of Age and Sex

Abstract: In order to study the relationships between sex hormones, aging, and circulating levels of cardiac natriuretic peptides and to define reference values for atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) and brain natriuretic peptide (BNP) assays, we measured the plasma levels of cardiac natriuretic peptides in a large group of healthy adults divided according to age and sex. We studied 216 healthy subjects of both sexes (109 men and 107 women) with age ranging from 20 to 77 years (mean 43.2+/-14.8 years). All subjects were n… Show more

“…In agreement with previous publications [6][7][8][9][10][11][12] , the levels of both natriuretic peptides increased with severity of the heart impairment. The highly significant relationship to age and gender for both natriuretic peptides found, accords with other studies [13][14][15][16][17][18] . Diuretics, ACE inhibitors, angiotensin receptor antagonists, betablockers and renal impairment have been shown to decrease levels of natriuretic peptides 19 .…”

“…The advised cutoff value for this group is 155 ng l À1 , using our cutoff point of 200 ng l À1 did not make any difference in our study population. For ANP, no differences in levels between men and women are described and a correlation with age is weaker than described in BNP (Clerico et al, 2002). The serum concentration of NT-proBNP was elevated in all patients with CHD.…”

“…In the studies previously performed in newborns and children, gender difference was not investigated. In the study performed by Clerico et al (13), BNP levels of healthy women (12.2±10.2 pg/ml) were compared with BNP levels of healthy men (7.7±7.1 pg/ml) and BNP levels of the women were found to be significantly higher. This result was attributed to female sex hormones.…”
