The Characteristics of Deep Optic Nerve Head Morphology in Myopic Normal Tension Glaucoma

Abstract: Temporalized angular locations of deep ONH parameters were associated with the presence of NTG in myopia. In myopic NTGs, the locations of deep ONH parameters were consistent with the locations of RNFL defect.

“…In this respect, the current observations that focal γPPA group had thinner RNFL than no γPPA group in the TI sector, an area in which focal LC defect and maximal focal γPPA frequently develop add to the literature. 14 Because focal LC defects are known to be closely associated with functional and structural damage to RGC axons, 11,26,27 development of an EOBT, glaucomatous RNFL defect, and focal LC defect may share a common pathway. Similarly, eyes with a focal LC defect had significantly thinner RNFL in the TI sector in all three subgroups of γPPA.…”

“…The border tissue is a cuff of collagenous tissue arising from the sclera that joins the Bruch’s membrane at the optic disc margin 75. Han et al 78 evaluated the externally oblique border tissue length, optic nerve head tilt angle and optic canal obliqueness, and observed that temporally located maximal values for these parameters were independently associated with the presence of myopic normal-tension glaucoma, and were consistent with the location of retinal nerve fibre layer defects.…”

“…In our recent study, we defined the deep ONH-associated parameters, such as externally oblique border tissue (EOBT) length, ONH tilt angle and optic canal (OC) obliqueness using BMO and border tissue, and reported that the maximum values of the deep ONH parameters were associated with axial length (AL). 13 In myopic normal tension glaucoma (NTG) eyes, the locations of the parameters showed topographic correspondence with RNFL defect. 13 Furthermore, the deep ONH parameters could demonstrate deep ONH vertical asymmetry even in ONH without definite PPA or disc tilt.…”
