The characteristic pattern of aspartate aminotransferase and alanine aminotransferase in the bitch with the cystic hyperplasia-pyometra complex: Effect of medical or surgical treatment

Abstract: In 75 clinically normal unspayed female control dogs between two and eleven years old the average plasma level of aspartate aminotransferase (AST) was 21.6 +/- 5.7 (+/- SD) IU/l, of alanine aminotransferase (ALT) 40.4 +/- 13.0 IU/l and of the AST/ALT ratio 0.6 +/- 0.2. These values showed only minor changes over years. In 96 bitches with the cystic hyperplasia-pyometra complex there was a very significant increase of the AST, decrease of the ALT and increase of the AST/ALT ratio. The changes were more pronounc… Show more

“…In these cases, bacteria involved in the pathogenesis of CEH, may have been killed either by uterine defence mechanisms or by antibiotic therapy (Dhaliwal et al 1998). The change in AST-ALT serum activity could be caused by the effects of E. coli endotoxins on liver function (De Schepper et al 1987). In our study the presence of E. coli Cytotoxin Necrotising Factor (CNF) + in uterus was associated with clinical signs of disease (increased AST, ALT and neutrophilia).…”

“…Tsumagari et al (2005) reported that a normal blood picture was found in all the treated bitches immediately after completion of treatment using dinoprost tromethamine. Schepper et al (1987) used natural PGF 2 α for the treatment of pyometra at the dose rate of 250 μg/kg/day for five days and observed normal serum biochem- istry in all the treated bitches at the completion of treatment. Fieni (2006) and Khan et al (2007) reported 84.4% and 83.33% recovery rates after using cloprostenol which was lower than in the present study.…”

“…It has been suggested that endotoxin from an E: coli infected uterus produces some of the clinical signs of pyometra (BOERRESEN, 1975;DE SCHEPPER et al, 1987;GILBERT, 1992). One of the aims of the present study was to determine plasma ET levels in bitches with pyometra.…”
