The Challenge of CT and MRI Imaging of Obese Individuals Who Present to the Emergency Department: A National Survey

Abstract: The objective of this study was to estimate the availability of large weight capacity computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) equipment in US hospitals with emergency departments (EDs) and to evaluate animal facilities as alternate sources of imaging. We conducted a telephone survey of radiology technicians from a random sample of all the US hospitals with EDs (n = 262) and all 136 primary hospitals of academic EDs, 145 zoos, and 28 veterinary schools. We measured the prevalence of large … Show more

“…These data suggest that, in addition to being a risk factor for developing PE, morbid obesity complicates the diagnostic evaluation of acute PE. The body habitus associated with morbid obesity presents a unique challenge to CT scanning, and we theorize that the logistics of CT scanning may have contributed to the diagnostic delay observed in our cohort (20). A decisive physical examination is also more challenging in the morbidly obese patient, which may have complicated diagnostic evaluations.…”

“…In 2007, 33.8% of adults (8) and 16.9% of children in the United States were obese (9), and 68.0% of U.S. adults were overweight (8). Radiology departments are increasingly challenged in their ability to perform imaging studies with acceptable diagnostic quality in these patients (10,11). Medical imaging device manufacturers have responded by designing new products to accommodate larger patients, and some hospitals are purchasing specialized equipment and remodeling their facilities (12).…”
