The Caries Inhibitory Effect of Repeated Topical Applications of NaF or NH4F in Rodents

Abstract: The caries inhibitory effect of topical applications of 200 ppm fluoride from neutral sodium and ammonium fluoride solutions was tested in the hamster. Similarly, 1,000 ppm fluoride from sodium and ammonium fluoride solutions with and without orthophosphate at pH 5 and 7 was tested in the rat. Also tested in the hamster study was the combination of neutral sodium or ammonium fluoride with Zonyl FSC (DuPont de Nemours, Wilmington, Del., USA). This positively charged surfactant accelerates the formation of apati… Show more

“…This raises the question, which property the Zonyl FSC cation may have in common with the ammonium ion that the sodium ion lacks. A hypothesis was raised by Gron [1983, 1987] and Gron et al [1987] comparing the structural properties of solutions containing NH4F or NaF with and without the presence of a qua ternary ammonium cationic fluorosurfactant Zonly FSC. Marcus [1977] characterizes ions like N a+ and Ca++ as being surrounded by strongly oriented im mobilized molecules of water in their primary hydra tion shells and by partially oriented water molecules in their secondary shells.…”
