“…These results are consistent with those reported by Baptista et al (2004), who found that albino Wistar rats fed aflatoxincontaminated diets did not show a reduction in food consumption or a decrease in weight gain. These results could be explained by the fact that rats are tolerant to aflatoxin effects (Barnes and Butler 1964), even though some authors have reported that the most common clinical symptoms are anorexia, reduction in weight gain and food conversion (Dickens and Jones 1963;Edds and Bortell 1983;Huff et al 1986;Kubena et al 1990).…”

“…The hepatocytes showed signs of degeneration, retention of pigments, and necrosis. These results are in agreement with those reported by Heathcote and Hibbert (1978), Baptista et al (2004) and Celik et al (2003), who documented cellular disorganization with proliferation of the bile ducts, necrosis of the hepatic parenchyma, vacuolization, swollen hepatocytes, fat degeneration and retention of pigments in liver tissues of animals that were fed diets with aflatoxins. These data suggest that the dose of aflatoxin given and the exposure time were sufficient to cause hepatotoxicity in the animals.…”

“…The mechanism of removing mycotoxins from the environment by microorganisms has not been thoroughly explained so far. It arises from the available literature that in the case of LAB and yeast, it is the result of cell wall adhesion, which is additionally confirmed by the fact that even dead cells preserve the said activity [27,28].…”
