The burden of mental disorders across the states of India: the Global Burden of Disease Study 1990–2017

Abstract: Background Mental disorders are among the leading causes of non-fatal disease burden in India, but a systematic understanding of their prevalence, disease burden, and risk factors is not readily available for each state of India. In this report, we describe the prevalence and disease burden of each mental disorder for the states of India, from 1990 to 2017. Methods We used all accessible data from multiple sources to estimate the prevalence of mental disorders, years lived with disability (YLDs), and disabilit… Show more

“…1 The impact of depression is substantial on individual and the country at large due to disturbed daily life. 2 The possible causes of depression can be altered neurotransmission, hypothalamic-hypophyseal-adrenal axis abnormalities involved in chronic stress, inflammation, reduced neuroplasticity, 3 reduced levels of neurotrophic factors, and glutamate-mediated toxicity. 4 Any situation which activates cortisol secretion may lead to depression because cortisol has a neurotoxic effect directly and indirectly through its hyperglycemic effect.…”

“…Sample size was calculated based on the formulan=Z1α/22/d2Pfalse(1Pfalse),where P is prevalence of schizophrenia in India = 0.3% (Sagar et al., 2020), Z 1− α /2 is the standard normal variate (at 5% type I error ( p < .05) is 1.96, d is absolute error or precision which 2%). Based on the above formula the significant sample size would be 29.…”
