The bruxism screener (BruxScreen): Development, pilot testing and face validity

Abstract: BackgroundTo assess awake and sleep bruxism, the Standardised Tool for the Assessment of Bruxism (STAB) is currently being developed. The STAB will be a comprehensive tool for the detailed assessment of bruxism behaviour itself as well as of its possible consequences, causes, and comorbid conditions.ObjectiveSince the STAB cannot fully meet the ‘A4 principle’ for a bruxism assessment tool, i.e., being Accurate (reliable and valid), Applicable (feasible), Affordable (cost‐effective), and Accessible (suitable fo… Show more

“…bruxism status) represent the core part of the STAB. A screening instrument have been developed to identify individuals who may benefit from administration of the full STAB 96 . If a patient is not positive for the bruxism status, there is no need to move onto the time‐demanding full version of the STAB.…”

“…Based on that, possible STAB workflows can also be figured out. A Bruxism Screener instrument 96 can be used to screen for bruxism in case of suspected bruxism status. The working hypothesis is that status has to be confirmed with the endorsement of specific items.…”

“…10 In parallel, a screening instrument, viz., the Bruxism Screener (BruxScreen) has been prepared by the core group of STAB developers to be used in largescale epidemiological research projects and, especially, in general, dental practices. 39 The screening instrument is particularly important to fit with the need to satisfy the A4 principle of Applicability, Affordability, Accessibility and Accuracy 2 that are prevented by the comprehensiveness of the STAB.…”

“…The process that led to the development of the instrument, which started in 2018, after the publication of the ‘work in progress’ consensus paper on bruxism definition, 2 was described in two separate papers providing an introductory overview 9 and describing the road map to STAB finalisation, respectively 10 . In parallel, a screening instrument, viz., the Bruxism Screener (BruxScreen) has been prepared by the core group of STAB developers to be used in large‐scale epidemiological research projects and, especially, in general, dental practices 39 .
