The Breed and Season Effects on Scrotal Circumference and Semen Characteristics of Hair Sheep Rams Under Tropical Conditions

Abstract: The aim of the present work was to evaluate the breed and season effects on scrotal circumference (SC) and semen characteristics of 28 mature hair sheep rams kept under tropical conditions. SCs, sperm concentration (SPC) and abnormal sperm were significantly affected by breed effect (p < 0.001). “…Thus, in our case the high number of distal droplets is most likely related to the examination of epididymal spermatozoa and/or due to the young age of the rams. The scrotal circumference of the rams examined in this study (27.68 cm) is less than reported for hair sheep (∼31‐35 cm) and is most likely due to the young age of the rams examined as their scrotal circumference was increasing each month examined . The increase in distal droplets in the moderate and severe ultrasound groups may be related to alterations in epididymal transport time in rams with more severe lesions.…”

In tropical hair sheep, breed and seasonal temperature changes do affect scrotal circumference and semen quality, but rams are still able to maintain good semen quality throughout the year .
