The Boyd Orr Lecture: Nutrition interventions in aging and age-associated disease

Abstract: Aging is a complex biological process, which usually is accompanied by changes in socioeconomic status, which may have a great impact on the physical and nutritional status of the elderly. Decreased food intake and a sedentary lifestyle in the growing numbers of the elderly increase their risk for malnutrition, decline of bodily functions and developing chronic diseases. Oxidative stress is believed to be an important factor in aging and many age-associated degenerative diseases. Modulation of oxidative stress… Show more

“…Antioxidants to prevent freeradical mediated protein damage are used to delay progressive aging and diseases. 28,29 The thiol group of cysteine plays an important role in the antioxidation of ROS and free radicals. 11,12 In the present study, however, cysteine also acted as a radical mediator to induce protein secondary conformational changes of BSA to form aggregation in the presence of UV-B irradiation.…”

“…4. Western blot scanning densitometry quantification of the levels of total p53 and phosphorylated p53 at serine 15 in liver of ␣-tocopherol supplemented mice at 6 months and 22 months of age relative to age-matched controls. Protein levels were not significantly affected by age or by treatment (p Ͼ 0.05).…”

“…11,12 However, the long-term benefits of vitamin E supplementation appear confused. Some studies suggest supplementation can ameliorate various cardiovascular, neurological, and oxidative stress parameters in mammals, [13][14][15] and others report little or no effect. 16 Indeed, dietary vitamin E deficiency is associated with various pathologies, including diabetes, atherosclerosis, and various cancers.…”

“…The physiological, social and economic changes that are associated with ageing can lead to a compromised nutritional status (Finch et al 1998;Meydani 2002), and a substantial proportion of older populations may have low fruit and vegetable (FV) intakes (Wakimoto and Block 2001;Appleton et al 2009). However, a growing body of observational evidence suggests that increased FV consumption and/or nutrients associated with a diet high in FV, such as carotenoids and vitamin C, may be associated with improved physical function and muscle strength (Cesari et al 2004a;Houston et al 2005;Myint et al 2007;Lauretani et al 2008;Robinson et al 2008;Tomey et al 2008).…”
