The Boston Naming Test and Swedish children: Normative Data and response analysis

Abstract: The present study concerns responses to the Boston Naming Test (BNT) in a sample of native Swedish-speaking children between the ages of 6 and 15. Normative data are presented not only for the number of correct responses but also for the frequency of types of substitutive responses on the BNT. The study involved 152 children and adolescents from four different grades (kindergarten, third grade, sixth grade, and ninth grade). For the sample, a normal distribution of test subjects was sought, including both ling… Show more

“…The Boston Naming Test (BNT; Kaplan, Goodglass, Weintraub, Segal & van Loon‐Vervoorn, ) is a language assessment of picture naming and vocabulary for establishing receptive language ability using a confrontation naming paradigm (Brusewitz & Tallberg, ) which has been similarly employed in the British Picture Vocabulary Scale (Dunn, Dunn, Whetton & Pintillie, ) and the Peabody Picture Vocabulary Scale (Dunn, Dunn, Bulheller & Häcker, ). The BNT has been used extensively to measure language ability in clinical (e.g., neuropsychological disorders), and non‐clinical populations (e.g., bilinguals), and consists of an inventory of 85, 60, 30 or 15 word‐picture corresponding items, graded in difficulty from easy to hard (Ferraro & Lowell, ).…”

“…CLPT (Competing Language Processing Task; Gaulin and Campbell, 1994 , Swedish adaptation) was used to assess complex working memory. TROG-2 (Test for Reception of Grammar – Second edition; Bishop, 2003 , Swedish adaptation; Bishop, 2009 ) was used to assess receptive grammar, and BNT (Boston Naming Test; Kaplan et al, 2001 , Swedish adaptation; Brusewitz and Tallberg, 2010 ) to test expressive vocabulary. Phonological short term memory was measured with a non-word repetition task, NWrep ( Sahlén et al, 1999 ; Wass et al, 2008 ), assessing repetition ability of non-words of increasing length and complexity.…”
